    Baghdad today - Erbil
Today, Monday, the Kurdistan Elections and Referendum Commission confirmed its technical readiness to hold elections in the region, according to the date set by the region's presidency, adding that one "obstacle" prevents that.
"Holding legislative elections in the region requires re-activating the commission by the Kurdistan Parliament," said commission spokesman Sherwan Zarara to (Baghdad Today).
He added, "We cannot currently start preparations for the elections, due to the expiration of the legal term of the Commission and the vacancy of two seats in the Board of Commissioners," noting that "these problems impede work within the Kurdistan Parliament."
Yesterday, Sunday, the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, according to Law No. 1 of 2005 amending the Law of the Presidency of the Region, issued a decree to hold the elections for the Kurdistan Parliament in its sixth legislative session, specifying 11/18/2023 as the date for holding those elections.
Yesterday, Sunday, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan stipulated that holding the elections in the Kurdistan region be committed to the Kurdish political parties' agreement to divide the electoral districts in the region into 4, clean and determine the voter records, as well as determine the proportion of the "quota" components.
A member of the National Union, Burhan Al-Sheikh, told (Baghdad Today) that they "do not object to the new date set for the Kurdistan elections, and our condition can be adherence to the agreement concluded between the Kurdish parties."
Al-Sheikh added, "The region's parliament is scheduled to hold a session in the coming days to vote on the political agreement," explaining that "if the agreement is included and voted on, then we have no problem with the elections and we are ready for them."
