The list of Arab countries with the most renewable electricity capacity by the end of last year (2022) shows the success of most countries in the region in increasing the capacity of clean sources, amid the global drive towards green transition.
Data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) show that the capacity of generating electricity from renewable energy globally rose last year to 3,372 terawatts, an annual growth rate of 9.6%, despite the crises that befell the world as a result of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
And Iraq achieved a slight growth, according to IRNA, in the capacity of installed clean sources during the past year, amounting to 0.31%, on an annual basis, to come in sixth place in the list of Arab countries with the most renewable electricity capacity.
The renewable electricity capacity in Iraq increased during the past year to 1,599 GW, compared to 1,594 GW in 2021.
Iraq increased the capacity of electricity generated through solar energy sources to 0.042 GW in 2022, compared to 0.037 GW in 2021.
The electricity generation capacity of hydropower - the largest contributor to the country's renewable electricity capacity - was stable at 1,797 GW.
Earlier in January of this year, a spokesman for the Ministry of Electricity, Ahmed Musa, revealed obstacles facing Iraq's investment in renewable energy.
Musa said, "His ministry has concluded a number of contracts with large international companies, but there are major obstacles facing the work of these companies in Iraq."
He explained that "one of the most important problems facing these companies is the lack of financial financing, in addition to the list of conditions and instructions set by the International Monetary Fund against Iraq."
Moussa added, "The regulation issued by the International Monetary Fund is not commensurate with the situation of companies to proceed with work on these projects inside Iraq."
Egypt, Morocco and the UAE top the list of Arab countries with the most renewable electricity capacity by the end of 2022.
