The implementation of the (Al-Mohandes) project in Samawah represents a "paradigm shift" in investing the desert areas agriculturally and benefiting from them to support Iraq's food basket through soil reclamation and expansion of the cultivation of strategic crops, as well as providing job opportunities for the people of the province.
Recently, the head of the Popular Mobilization Authority, Faleh Al-Fayyad, inaugurated the (Al-Mohandes) project in Al-Muthanna Governorate, which includes planting one million palm trees and a number of other strategic crops, such as wheat.
The deputy chief of staff of the Popular Mobilization Authority, Yasser Al-Issawi, told Al-Sabah: The date palm represents an important economic resource, and is distinguished by its stabilization of the soil and its cover for agricultural crops such as vegetables of various types, and it is also distinguished by its abundant production of dates and rapid growth.
For his part, Salah Mahdi, Executive Director of the project, said: The (Al-Mohandes) company started planting the first system with an area of 400 dunums for 20,000 vegetatively planted trees, with the aim of planting one million palm trees during this year. He pointed out that the project aims to reclaim two million dunums of abandoned land, which has many problems of rugged terrain and the presence of a large group of mines, but through our work in the Hashd Authority, large quantities of abandoned minefields were cleaned and these areas were carefully planned in order to plant palm trees and jojoba trees that bear Harsh climatic conditions after being imported from the Arab Republic of Egypt. He pointed out that there is a great challenge to agriculture in the desert, and the young Iraqi experience in this matter is trying to advance by benefiting from the experiences of others and starting from where they left off.
He added that the project will shorten the time in land reclamation, in addition to its production and marketing goals and benefits such as installing modern irrigation systems, which paves the way for changing the desert environment of Samawah into a more beautiful one and reducing the burden of dust and hot winds that intend to preserve and work on climate change in a tangible way during the coming period. . For his part, Abdul Karim Hamad, the agricultural consultant at (Al-Mohandes) Company, explained that this project is huge and pioneering, and is one of the first steps to reclaim the Samawah desert and transform it into a positive and productive agricultural state.
And he indicated that the project is not limited to palm trees, but there are other crops, such as jojoba trees and wood-producing trees, and the cultivation of strategic crops such as wheat, barley, soybeans, maize, potatoes and other food crops.
Hamad added that the (Al-Mohandes) company planned from the outset to use modern methods of irrigation and to rationalize water use, as we resorted to pivot sprinklers, each of which irrigate 120 dunums, with quantities of water less than the amount wasted in surface irrigation.
He added that the company also took another, more economical path, which is watering by drip irrigation, which gives the palm tree or sapling its need of water and prevents evaporation and bush growth. The agricultural consultant in the company, Abdul Hussein Saad, also explained that the project site has an underground water channel with economical depths and good quality, and it is a wide area characterized by environmental diversity and the quality of field crops that we desperately need. He added that there are more than 26 sprinklers that irrigate areas planted with the wheat crop, in addition to the areas used for fixed spraying and semi-semi irrigation. In turn, Talib Abdullah, advisor to the Muthanna governor, said that this project extends over an area of two million dunums in the Samawah desert, which exceeds 22 million dunums, and will be A real start for future projects in the governorate, which has huge reserves of groundwater and high-quality soil.
Abdullah pointed out the installation of pivot sprinklers and the reliance on modern irrigation methods in the cultivation of field crops and the expansion of the cultivation of wheat and barley crops, as well as the cultivation of many types of vegetables in this region, which witnessed during the previous years a steady increase and increase in the production of the wheat crop, so the (Al-Mohandes) project will contribute In providing additional quantities of wheat to support the local need for this strategic material.
For his part, the Administrative Undersecretary of the Ministry of Water Resources, Raed Abd Zaid Al-Jashami, stated that the ministry reviewed in detail the food security project that is being implemented under the auspices of the Popular Mobilization Authority in the Samawah desert, as it contains promising scientific methods in agriculture and the use of modern irrigation techniques that would lead to to the optimal use of groundwater.
He added that the project contributes significantly to the diversification of the country's strategic products, as a result of the country's suffering from water scarcity for three consecutive seasons.
