Political and parliamentary circles welcomed a draft bill voted by the US Senate to end two authorizations to wage war on Iraq in 1991 and 2003, believing that this would contribute to strengthening stable and balanced relations between Iraq and the US side.
And the US Senate voted overwhelmingly last Monday in favor of advancing legislation to cancel two authorizations dating back decades to wage two wars on Iraq, and the legislation was transferred to the House of Representatives (the second chamber of Congress), which is expected to pass it as well, as the Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy, stated, He told reporters last week that he would support those efforts as long as part of the "Authorization for Use of Military Force" for the war on terror remained.
Commenting on the American legislative movement, Hussein Al-Amiri, a member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, said in an interview with Al-Sabah: “The recent vote of the US Senate to end the authorization for the war on Iraq that was granted to the American president is a good initiative.”
He pointed out that “Prime Minister Muhammad Shia’ al-Sudani’s approach is different from others in dealing with foreign relations, especially with the United States of America, as al-Sudani’s policy is transparent, and through this American legislative step, it is possible to open a new page with the American coalition forces in order to train forces.” Iraq and also for the arming of the Iraqi army ».
Al-Amiri noted that "this step will result in security and stability in Iraq in light of the war that does not know its end between Russia and Ukraine, especially since stability in our region serves all parties and serves Iraq directly."
He stressed that "negotiation and transparency in dealing with the American side leads to stability in the region, and we in Iraq hope that there will be no differences or disagreements between neighboring countries, because this affects the stability of the political, economic and security conditions of the country."
For his part, the political analyst, Dr. Salah Bushi, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that the US Senate vote “is a great investment opportunity for the Iraqi state if it is invested by the executive authority in the right way, for Iraq to have international support from the United States of America for the political system.” And the executive authority that represents the Iraqi state ».
He pointed out that “according to the legislation voted by the Senate and which is expected to be ratified in the US House of Representatives, the concerns about military and war influences from the United States of America will diminish, which makes the Iraqi arena free from foreign militarization, and perhaps the United States will become

Bushi stressed, "This step of foreign relations is important for the political system and the current stage of the Iraqi state, especially since the growth and understanding of institutional work has become clear through the executive authority and the government of Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani," calling for intensified support for the executive authority "in order to achieve political and economic stability." Supporters of the current bill describe the authorizations for the use of military force of 1991 and 2002 against Iraq as "dead authorizations", and say that they are outdated and inappropriate, because the wars ended a long time ago, and "Iraq has become a partner of the United States."
Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said before the vote: “Removing these authorizations will show the region and the world that the United States is not an occupying power, that the Iraq war is over, and that we are moving forward and working with Iraq as a strategic partner.”
While the leader of the Republicans in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, is radically opposed to ending the authorization for the Iraq war, as he said last week that Congress should not tie the hands of American leaders in the Middle East, considering that the authorization is important in Iraq today “because it provides powers to the American forces there.” To defend itself from a variety of real and pressing threats,” he said.
