Today, Tuesday, the President of the Republic, Abd al-Latif Jamal Rashid, stressed the need to encourage investment in the agricultural sector, and work to secure Iraq's water shares from the upstream countries.
And the office of the President of the Republic stated, in a statement received by (Baghdad Today), that "President Rashid received, at the Baghdad Palace, the Minister of Agriculture, Abbas Al-Alaywi, and they discussed the challenges facing Iraq in the issue of water scarcity and its direct effects on the agricultural sector."
He added that "Rashid and Al-Alaywi stressed the importance of working to secure fair water shares from the source countries," noting "the importance of the agricultural sector as one of the basic resources for the national economy and providing food security."
Rashid pointed out, according to the statement, the need to "encourage investment opportunities in this vital sector to achieve sustainable development, and use advanced technologies and modern irrigation methods to advance the agricultural reality and to confront the environmental effects of drought, desertification and climate change, which has become a global crisis."
The President of the Republic also touched on Iraq's participation in the water conference organized by the United Nations in New York recently, and the outputs he called for in dealing with the global water crisis, and the affirmation of the heads and leaders of the participating countries to support Iraq's efforts in this field.
For his part, the Minister of Agriculture expressed his thanks to the President of the Republic for his directives, explaining the ministry's plan for the current agricultural season, and its endeavor to confront the obstacles facing this vital sector.
