Shafaq News/ Brain drain from the Arab world is a concern for some governments, due to its negative effects on the standard of life in the country scientifically, professionally, economically and socially.
Brain drain can be described as the countries losing their most educated and talented children such as scientists, and specialists from various sectors to other countries through immigration, where they contribute their expertise to the economy of other countries.
Therefore, the countries of the region may suffer from economic difficulties, because those who remain do not have sufficient know-how to make a difference, and this causes the country and the various sectors and industries to lose their qualified cadres, and reduce the existing competencies, which in turn causes harm to the country's economy and leads to its setback at all levels. .
The most prominent Arab countries that suffer from brain drain
A report by the euronews network says that what has exacerbated the brain drain crisis in the Arab world in recent years is the emigration of doctors that hit the health sector in more than one Arab country, especially after the Corona pandemic, as some Western countries opened the way for many to move to live in, with Great material and professional incentives.
According to the country and the brain drain index, Syria topped (8.1), Morocco (7.4), Yemen (6.7), Iraq (6.4), Lebanon (6.3), Tunisia (5.5), Algeria (5.4), Jordan (5.4), and Egypt. (5.1), Libya (5.1), Djibouti (4.3), Bahrain and Saudi Arabia (3), Kuwait (2.7), UAE (2.2), Oman (1.8), and Qatar (1.2).
According to a report by the Global Economy website, which specializes in studying the economic prospects of countries, it became clear that the countries of the Arab world differ among themselves in terms of leaving scientific cadres.
As Syria topped the scene, due to the war going on there for years, while Qatar was the best in the Arab world in terms of the lack of brain drain.
On the other hand, the Statista statistical platform published a report showing the ranking of countries that witnessed the largest rate of emigration of trained medical personnel, and if India topped the scene with 74,455 doctors leaving the country in 2021, Egypt was ranked first in the Arab world after 12,525 doctors traveled.
Although the phenomenon of Arab brain drain began in the nineteenth century and increased in the twentieth century, especially after the end of World War II, according to reports by the League of Arab States, the period at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century witnessed a significant increase in these percentages.
Also, after the failure of the Arab revolutions that erupted in Tunisia in 2011, to bring about the required change, and the events that followed in most Arab countries, prompted the citizens of these countries, especially the elites, to travel in search of stability.
According to studies by "UNESCO", the Arab League and the World Bank, the Arab world has lost a third of its human capacity in light of the brain drain that its countries are witnessing. These studies indicated that the destination of Arab cadres was mostly Europe, Australia and Canada.
She pointed out that approximately 50% of these are specialized doctors, approximately 23% are engineers, and the remaining percentage are specialists in various fields.

Half of the Arab students who travel do not return
According to these studies, the crisis lies in the fact that 54% of Arab students who travel for education do not return to their home countries due to the scarcity of job opportunities.
The proportion of these is large in European countries, for example 34% of students in Britain are from Arab countries.
And 100,000 doctors and engineers come to the UK every year from Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria.
All these figures prompted specialists and international institutions to issue warnings to Arab countries that if this flow of talent continues, these countries will witness a decline in the level of services, and they will not be able to reach the required levels of growth.
The emigration of Arab minds is considered a loss in the field of education in all its stages, as the illiteracy rate in the Arab world is about 49%, and this figure constitutes one of the main obstacles to Arab development in an era in which scientific and technical competencies and knowledge represent the main source of excellence and competition between nations.
Statistics indicate that three rich Western countries, namely the United States, Canada and Britain, receive 75% of Arab immigrants. According to figures, the Arab world contributes 31% of the competencies and immigrant minds from developing countries, and 50% of doctors, 23% of engineers, and 15% Scientists from the pool of Arab competencies migrate to Europe, the United States and Canada.
One of the reports of the Arab Labor Organization estimated that the losses incurred by the Arab countries annually are no less than 200 billion dollars due to brain drain abroad, and these numbers are associated with great losses resulting from rehabilitating these minds and paying the cost of their education within their homelands, which confirms that the Arab countries, along with other countries Developing countries provide assistance to developed countries by qualifying them for these competencies and then exporting them to these developed countries to benefit from their scientific expertise.
