    Information/translation...
A report by Al-Jazeera English revealed, on Wednesday, an increase in cancer cases in the city of Erbil and the Kawergosk camp for Syrian refugees, after the facilities resumed oil production in recent years.
The report, which was translated by Al-Maalouma Agency, stated, "According to doctors working in the Kurdish region in northern Iraq and the population, burning petroleum gas by igniting any excess in a jet of fire by a nearby oil refinery may contribute to a rise in cancer rates, as the refinery is operated from Kar Group, the largest private sector energy company in Iraq owned by the Barzani family, declined to comment on the matter.
He added, “According to a study published by the Asian Pacific Cancer Journal, the number of cancer patients doubled between 2013 and 2019 in Erbil and Dohuk in northern Iraq, and the reason is related to the resumption of production in Kurdish oil facilities in Iraq.” after the defeat of ISIS.
The report stated that "about 1,200 tons of US munitions were dropped on Iraq during the Gulf wars in 1991 and 2003, which makes it difficult to distinguish between cancer cases caused by ignition and those resulting from depleted uranium left over from the bombing, but experts are still very concerned about 8,000 refugees living in Kawergosk were exposed to dangerous chemicals such as benzene due to ignition."
"Benzene is a potent carcinogen that causes leukemia and I think it's alarming to be exposed when people are in the vicinity," said Laura Cushing, chair of equity health at the University of California's Fielding School of Public Health.
The report indicated that, "According to a 2020 University of California study led by Cushing, pregnant women who live near natural gas and oil wells that burn excess gas through combustion were 50 percent more likely to have a preterm premature birth compared to women who were not exposed."
The report stressed that "respiratory viruses are almost twice as common among children under the age of 15 in the areas administered by the Kurdistan Regional Government compared to neighboring Iran. The population suffers from deteriorating health conditions, according to a study conducted by the Global" Pediatric Health" Foundation, and with However, burn levels appear to have remained largely the same based on satellite data from 2018 to November of 2022, which was analyzed as part of a collaborative investigation funded by the Environmental Reporting Group.
