The spokesman for the Iraqi Prime Minister, Basem Al-Awadi, explained, on Saturday, the reasons for not passing the development road project in the Kurdistan Region.
Al-Awadi said, "The design company, when it planned the route of the road, had a desire for the road to pass through the Kurdistan Region, but they collided with the geographical ruggedness in the region, given that the region is located on mountain ranges and large valleys."
He added, "When the planners drew up the road route traffic plans in the Kurdistan Region, they discovered that the planner in the Kurdistan Region increases the work at a rate of six years instead of four years, and costs a total addition of $20 billion instead of $17 billion."
Al-Awadi pointed out that "the planners need more than ten long bridges on the land road."
As for the railway, Al-Awadi said, "We need more than ten long tunnels digging through the mountains in order to connect the railway from the Iraqi port of Al-Faw to the Turkish city of Vishakhur."
And he continued, "Iraq has great keenness to complete the project without obstacles, and after studying the plan, the passage of the road and the railways, the planners chose, and for the speed of completion, and the technical reason, they chose the Rabia and Mosul road, leading to the Turkish Fishakhur."
He concluded by saying, "After the completion and completion of the project, special roads will be established linking the land and railways to the governorates of the Kurdistan Region, and that the road will not pass through the Kurdistan Region due to a technical issue related to the rugged terrain, the cost increase and the duration of the project implementation."
Today, Saturday, the work of the Development Road Conference was concluded in the capital, Baghdad, with the participation of ministers of transport or their representatives from countries; Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, Jordan, Syria, the Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman, in addition to representatives of the European Union and the World Bank. Before that, the Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani, inaugurated the conference, which was sponsored by him, according to a statement issued by his media office, which was reported to Shafaq News agency.
Al-Sudani stressed, according to the statement, the present and future importance of the development road project, and the interdependence of the reasons for economic integration of the countries of the region with the interests and partnerships that the road course and all related projects will enhance.
The participating delegations discussed the process of initiating the implementation steps, and transforming the understandings between the leaders of the countries into a road map that witnesses the initiation of development projects related to the path of development.
