Today, Sunday, the Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia'a Al-Sudani, issued directives related to the water file.
A statement by his media office stated, “Today, Al-Sudani visited the Ministry of Water Resources, where he chaired a meeting of its opinion committee, during which the water situation and the challenges facing Iraq in this field were reviewed, and the measures taken to confront the crisis.”
The Prime Minister stressed, “The need to review the management of the water file, which should not be limited to the ministry’s efforts only, but rather requires the mobilization of the entire state’s efforts, both internally and externally.”
He pointed out, "There is a weakness in the use of modern technology in operating the electronic-hydraulic system for the operation of dams, in addition to the obvious defect in monitoring the quality and quantity of water at the entrances and exits of the governorates."
Al-Sudani directed “the importance of creating special legislation to remove the abuses and punish the violators, as well as the procedures related to switching to closed irrigation, and removing the abuses represented by unlicensed lakes, as well as working to close the untreated sewage outlets on the rivers, and prevent this phenomenon that causes the destruction of the water environment.” as well as its negative effects on citizens.
He also directed to “raise sediments in river sections, and not delay in establishing associations for water users,” pointing to “the importance of applying modern scientific research and studies, and applying the system of competition between governorates without limiting its application to districts only.”
Al-Sudani stressed “the need to take quick measures to meet the challenges of the summer season,” stressing that “the agricultural plan for the new season will be limited to farmers who adopt modern methods of irrigation.”
And between "the need to proceed with administrative reform in the ministries, and not to hesitate in combating corruption."
He pointed to "the importance of following up the requirements and rights of employees, directing the follow-up of the housing file and plots of land allocated to them, and the need for this file to be present in the interests of the Opinion Commission."
For his part, the Minister of Water Resources expressed his thanks for "the unprecedented high interest that the Prime Minister gives to the water file, and the reform efforts in this sector.
