Construction: Technical problems in the roads led to an increase in traffic accident rates

The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Public Municipalities acknowledged that the technical problems and the presence of cracks and grooves in the external roads led to an increase in the registration of traffic accidents, reaching the threshold of 11,000 accidents annually.
Meanwhile, the General Traffic Directorate revealed that companies submitted offers to construct 10 kilometers of streets within a week.
The Director of the National Center for Engineering Consultations at the Ministry, Eng. Hassan Madb Mejhem, said during the launch of the first scientific conference on roads for the year 2023: The conference aims to solve the problems of roads, especially the link between the governorates according to the government program, as well as employing the capabilities of scientific research to come up with real solutions to these problems.
And he indicated that the ministry is working to ensure that the roads in the next stage are safe and sound by rehabilitating them to contribute to reducing traffic accidents, especially since there are 11,000 accidents recorded annually in the country on the external roads that connect the governorates.
Mujahem explained on the sidelines of the conference to "Al-Sabah" that the external roads suffer from cracks and grooves due to their exposure to very high temperatures and high loads that exceed their capacities, in addition to the presence of technical problems that need a real revolution to end the suffering of citizens, warning that the conference will produce A large number of recommendations that will be implemented in coordination with the relevant sectoral authorities.
For his part, the Director of the Roads and Bridges Department at the Ministry, Engineer Hussein Jassim Kazem, told Al-Sabah: The conference seeks to spread the traffic culture among the citizen and the application of all traffic systems, in addition to setting priorities in the implementation of the government program, indicating that the Ministry works in coordination with the authorities. The relevant sectors in order to preserve the roads and their approaches, especially since there are many government agencies that encroach on the roads by extending services illegally, which called on the Ministry to seek coordination with the department to implement services according to the formulas used.
In turn, the representative of the General Traffic Directorate, Brigadier Basem Muhammad, told Al-Sabah: The Directorate is working in an integrated manner with other service agencies for the success of the reconstruction of roads and bridges.
He pointed out that the Directorate is soon working to activate the camera system to follow up on violators, in addition to coordinating with the Municipality of Baghdad in order to activate the indicative signs, pointing out that there are companies that have offered plans to construct roads of 10 kilometers within a week, which will lead to the rehabilitation of all Baghdad streets within a period of time. Not more than 6 months if it is actually implemented, and therefore this will address the traffic congestion that increases due to the spread of road construction and cladding works.
