Significant material damage was caused to shipping offices and merchants, 12 days after the closure of the Fishkhabour-Semalka crossing.
Kasbah and the truck drivers say that the closure of the crossing has caused great harm to them, and if the situation continues as it is, they will lose their jobs and their daily sustenance.
The “Kar” company for transporting and shipping goods from its headquarters in the Kurdistan Region to Rojava Kurdistan (northeast Syria), used to transport 60 tons of goods and materials to Rojava per week, while the Kurdistan Region was receiving 30 tons of goods and materials from Rojava through the company.
However, since the closure of the crossing between the two parties, the company's employees have become unemployed.
The director of the “Kar” company in the Kurdistan Region, Saud Karshi, told Rudaw Media Network, Thursday (June 1, 2023), “We suffered damages after the closure of the Fishkhabur-Semalka crossing, because we have to pay 10-15 thousand dollars a month as salaries for workers and wages for offices, in addition to We used to ship $15,000 worth of goods and materials a week, and the closure caused a loss in all of that.”
The refugee, Mayssar Ibrahim, has been working as a driver for the company for two years, and he is a father of 4 children. He considers driving as his only livelihood for himself and his family, and the decision to close the crossing has made him unemployed now, with the possibility of losing his job.
He tells Rudaw Media Network: “The company will close its doors if the Fishkhabur-Semalka crossing continues to be closed, and therefore we will lose our work.”
It is noteworthy that there are 5 companies from Rojava for transporting and shipping goods, active in the Kurdistan Region.
In turn, the trader, Shoresh Tariq, told Rudaw Media Network that they send 8 tankers every week carrying a load of clothes to Rojava Kurdistan, indicating that each tanker costs them $2,500.
And he added, "We send 8 shipments every week, which means that we lost $20,000 in the 11 days of closing the crossing."
The Fishkhabour-Semalka crossing has been closed since May 20, until further notice.
The Semalka crossing between the Kurdistan Region and Rojava has been opened since 2013, and it is a major and important route for trade, economy, and the movement of citizens and humanitarian organizations, but it was temporarily closed between the two sides for several times during those years.
More than 60% of basic foodstuffs such as sugar, rice and flour, and building materials such as cement and iron enter Rojava through the crossing, and citizens and patients with serious diseases, as well as brides, enter the Kurdistan Region.
