While Iraq - especially the southern regions - has been facing for years a crisis and water scarcity due to various reasons, foreign reports have revealed that Western and international oil companies operating in southern Iraq have exacerbated the water crisis in Mesopotamia by using the "water injection" technique in oil wells, as it revealed Reports that these companies use "fresh water" in this process, so that one "barrel of oil" is produced through the injection of 3 "barrels of fresh water", which raised the resentment of parliamentarians and experts in the environment and water.
"Al-Sabah" draws the attention of the competent authorities through the current report on this environmental setback. It will also publish (tomorrow, Thursday) a translated report detailing, with numbers and evidence, the contribution of these companies to the destruction of the environment and waters of Iraq and their evasion of their binding responsibility in licensing contracts.
A member of the Parliamentary Oil, Gas and Natural Resources Committee, Representative Bassem Nghimesh Al-Gharibawi, stated in an exclusive interview with Al-Sabah that, “According to reports, each barrel of oil needs three barrels of fresh water in the process of (water injection) into the oil wells,” and indicated that “ A parliamentary question was directed to the Minister of Oil by Representative Dr. Raed Al-Maliki, asking him about the quantities of fresh water consumed in oil wells, due to the lack of accurate figures in this regard.
matter.”
He pointed out that "there are many contracts concluded for the purpose of using (sea water) to inject oil wells, and unfortunately, this project has not seen the light until now, and this is what causes clear pressure on fresh water and causes its scarcity."
With regard to the non-compliance of foreign companies with paying the fines imposed by the Ministry of Environment for their contribution to pollution, Al-Gharibawi explained, "The Iraqi law must be applied to everyone, and therefore all companies are obligated to preserve the environment," noting that "there are in some contracts - which we have seen On it - clear paragraphs that oblige oil companies to preserve the environment, especially since burning gas associated with oil is the cause of an environmental disaster.
For his part, Ahmed Hamdan Al-Jashami, Secretary of the "Environmental Protection and Biological Diversity Assembly", said in an exclusive interview with "Al-Sabah": "Iraq has been suffering for a period of environmental setbacks in various aspects, as international organizations and countries engaged in this field confirmed that Iraq One of the five most vulnerable countries to the coming climate crises.
He pointed out that "the first things that seemed prominent after 2003 were drought and the collapse of surface water by 30% of what it was in the past, in addition to the fact that the first and main reason is the upstream countries, then comes unstudied agriculture, and the other reason that has a direct impact is the oil companies." Which contributed significantly to drought and environmental pollution," stressing that "it cannot be denied that in return for extracting one barrel of oil, three barrels of fresh water are consumed through injection, and this draws an axiomatic matter that (whenever the ceiling of oil production is raised, it is matched by the waste of groundwater or surface water) About three times the amount of oil produced.
Al-Jashami noted that "many agreements concluded by successive Iraqi governments with major British, American, French, Russian and Chinese companies require that (sea water) be injected instead of (fresh water) as compensation for the product, but this has not been implemented so far." He warned that "in the event of a delay in the project of injecting (seawater) into the oil fields, this will cause desertification, a decrease in cultivated areas, an abundance of salts, and successive environmental collapses, which means an absolute decrease in water reservoirs."
subterranean".
As for the former advisor to the Parliamentary Agriculture Committee, Adel Al-Mukhtar, he stated in an exclusive interview with “Al-Sabah” that the water problem is “real and great.” That Iraq is on the verge of a major water crisis.
And he indicated that "the oil field is one of the exploiters of water, as the quantity is estimated at one and a quarter million cubic meters annually of water used to extract oil," stressing that "oil companies must use the treatment and injection mechanism through impure saline water or sea water to benefit from it, away from The consumption of fresh water increases the suffering of people.”
