The Ministry of Environment announced the launch of the project "Adaptation of rural families in southern Iraq to water scarcity caused by climate change by empowering women as agents of transformation and addressing the relationship between food, energy and water" with the support of the Canadian government and in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in the Republic of Iraq (FAW) today Thursday, June 8, 2023 in Baghdad.
This came during a speech delivered by the Minister of Environment, Eng. Nizar Amidi, at the project launch ceremony, which was attended by the Canadian Ambassador in Baghdad, the Director of the Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization in Baghdad, the Technical Agent, Dr. Jassim Al-Falahi, and representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Agriculture, Planning and Water Resources. Iraqi patriotism is to strengthen measures to adapt to the negative effects of climate change, especially on rural communities that are considered the most vulnerable, and because these effects have a relationship to the social, economic and health reality of these communities.
He added [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] the implementation of such projects focuses on adopting climate-smart agriculture (CSA) and introducing modern technologies and mechanisms in agriculture and irrigation, in addition to using renewable energies through designing irrigation systems that operate on solar energy and carrying out awareness and education campaigns using agricultural mechanisms that are resistant to the effects of climate change. These activities are in line with Iraq's directions in the Iraqi National Contribution Document for Climate Change and Iraq's commitments in the Paris Climate Agreement, achieving sustainable development goals and combating poverty.
