The Canadian government has allocated $7,300,000 to support the Rural Families Adaptation Project in the southern regions, which was launched at the end of last week, through the conclusion of an agreement with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Iraq.
The regional representative of the Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization at the United Nations, Dr. Abdul Hakim Al-Waer, told Al-Sabah: The agreement concluded by the organization with the Canadian government lasts for four years to implement projects to adapt rural families to face climate changes within the governorates of Babil, Maysan, Muthanna, Najaf, Diwaniyah, Dhi Qar and Wasit. .
He added that the project will empower women to use smart agriculture, address the relationship between food, energy and water, work on sustainability and raise awareness about climate change.
Al-Waer explained that the agreement will provide technical assistance, enhance the leadership and active participation of women farmers, improve the quality of the agricultural value chain and use sustainable energy in the countryside, as well as provide innovative materials for more sustainable management of natural resources in the agricultural field.
He added that the implementation of the project will be in cooperation with the ministries of agriculture, environment and water resources and other governmental partners, including local governments and agricultural unions, as well as non-governmental organizations.
Al-Waer stated that the agricultural sector is a major source of income for poor groups that suffer from food insecurity in the southern regions, and it is also the largest source of rural labor in Iraq, and therefore there must be projects to advance agricultural development and create a more diversified economy led by the private sector with the active participation of women farmers. .
He noted that the aim of the projects that will be launched is to reduce the impact of climate change and to enhance the strategic role of women as agents of change in climate action, as well as to adopt technological innovations that contribute to improving the efficiency of natural resource management.
For her part, Director of the Women's Empowerment Department at the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, Dr. Yousra Karim Mohsen, said in a press statement: Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing the country as it has affected the lifestyle of rural women. It includes smart agriculture programs and the development of irrigation systems through the optimal use of water, as 12,000 women will be trained, 12,000 families will be educated, including 2,000 families headed by women, and a female cadre of 50 women will be developed to manage and confront the risks of climate change.
