Today, Sunday, June 18, 2023, the President of the Republic, Dr. Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, received at the Baghdad Palace the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, Director of the Regional Bureau for Arab Countries of the United Nations Development Program, Mr. Abdullah Abdul-Razzaq Al-Dardari, and his accompanying delegation.
The President of the Republic stressed the importance of the existing relationship between Iraq and the United Nations through its specialized agencies, pointing to the need to strengthen and develop these relations to achieve the desired goals in supporting Iraq and in a way that helps resolve the problems related to the displaced and promote the economy and development in the country.
The President of the Republic stressed the importance of starting actual work and presenting tangible results in the file of the displaced, pointing out that there are approximately (600) thousand displaced people living in extremely complex and difficult conditions, and nothing has been provided to them on the ground, and this file must be completed by returning them to their areas of residence.
In this context, Mr. President also referred to the existence of national capabilities of engineers and manpower that can be utilized through cooperation with United Nations organizations in this regard.
The President of the Republic urged the delegation to visit the ministries of water resources, agriculture, electricity, and the marsh areas in the south of the country, to see the required needs, and to exchange visions, ideas and experiences to improve the reality of these areas. His Excellency also touched on the water crisis that Iraq is going through due to the water policies of neighboring countries and the lack of effective management of the water file. Let's transfer the output of electrical energy.
In turn, the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations expressed the United Nations' commitment to taking care of the marshes and other files, stressing that his next visit will include a new vision that depends on implementation and achievement.
Al-Dardari praised the positive developments taking place in Iraq, especially in stabilizing the security situation and restoring its regional and international role, reiterating the United Nations' support for Iraq in the areas of water management, training, studies, energy, and investment encouragement.
