Shafaq News/ Today, Saturday, about 40% of Iraq's population celebrates the birthdays of their parents and grandparents on the first of July, as their soul book bears the date of birth 1/7, which is the first day in the second half of the year.

The story begins sixty-six years ago when the Iraqi Civil Status Department decided to conduct a population census in 1957, and there was a wide campaign to register births throughout Iraq whose births were not registered in this department.

It became clear from this campaign that there were very large numbers of people who did not care about registering their names in the civil status register, or they were slow in this matter until the child reached school age, so they went at that time to obtain his official papers.

This was often the case with the children of poor, peasant and uneducated families who lived far from urban centers, civil registration offices, status identities, and hospitals. The women of those families usually gave birth in the modest house with the help of a female relative, and therefore a birth certificate was not issued for the born child.

It is remarkable that many of them were ignorant of the day of birth because the parents focused on the year of birth and did not pay attention to the day.

In addition, some families avoided registering male children for fear of enrolling them in compulsory military service when they reached the age of eighteen.

In order to get out of this impasse, the Circle of Souls chose the first of July as a unified date for the birth of these people as a compromise. Since this month falls in the middle of the year, so that the child's right to enroll in school is not lost and months of his life are not wasted.

The information of the Iraqi researcher, historian and encyclopedia, Dr. Ali Al-Nashmi, during his interview with Shafaq News agency, came in conformity with what was mentioned above, while he added that "most of the ages whose date of birth was recorded as 1/7 are in the sixties or below."

Social media usually witness collective congratulations on 1/7 due to the large number of people celebrating their birthdays on this day, which prompted some civil activists to submit a proposal to consider this day as a national occasion that everyone celebrates.

One of the anecdotes of this phenomenon that is narrated is that an official Iraqi delegation visited a country in the nineties of the last century, and when they arrived at the airport to check their passports, the authorities there refused to admit them under the pretext of “falsifying” their passports because all members of the delegation were born on July 1.

After the intervention of the Iraqi embassy in that country and its communication with the authorities, it explained to them the story of those born on the first of July, so that the country's authorities would agree to their entry.
