Alsumaria News - Internationals The

prestigious British magazine "The Economist" revealed that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is ready to bypass the Arab Peace Initiative in the event of an agreement for normalization with Israel, but he is asking for a large "dowry" in return.

The British magazine stated in a report that US President Joe Biden wanted Mohammed bin Salman to escalate relations with Israel to make them official, but the moment is still "not appropriate" for the Saudis because Israel is led by a difficult government, at a time when the Arab League accused "Netanyahu" this month. of committing a "war crime" by attacking a Palestinian refugee camp in Jenin.

However, the Biden administration hopes to reach an agreement by the end of the year to normalize relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel, as aides to the US president have traveled to Saudi Arabia in recent weeks to inquire about Mohammed bin Salman's demands.

And the magazine indicated that bin Salman already had an answer: He wanted a “big dowry” from the Americans, including weapons, security treaties, and assistance with the kingdom’s nascent nuclear program.

According to the magazine, in other words, normalization will not be more like a Saudi-Israeli deal than a Saudi-American deal, noting that supporters of Mohammed bin Salman's demands say that he is at the beginning of a new era in the Middle East and deserves this price.

The magazine noted that in the first 72 years of the state’s establishment, Israel established official relations with only two Arab countries: Egypt and Jordan, while 4 other countries were added in 4 months of 2020, namely: Bahrain, Morocco, Sudan and the Emirates, through the Abraham Accords.

Former US President Donald Trump made expanding Israel's relations in the region a top priority, as did his successor, Joe Biden, and it seems that Saudi Arabia always wins in this regard, because it is the largest economy in the region and the cradle of Islam.

But expectations of normalization of Saudi-Israeli relations have waned since Benjamin Netanyahu returned to power in Israel last December, explaining that while previous normalization deals continue, public enthusiasm has subsided among Israel's new friends.

The magazine said that Saudi officials are still shy about general normalization, but in recent months many experts believe that a deal is actually possible.

She pointed out that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has always stressed that it can only recognize Israel if it accepts the Arab Peace Initiative, and the Arab League endorsed the plan in 2002 as a condition for normal relations in exchange for the establishment of a Palestinian state.

The magazine pointed out that Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan did not refer to the initiative in a press conference with his American counterpart in Riyadh last month, and instead mentioned a "path to peace" for the Palestinians: Without it, "any normalization will have limited benefits," he said.

And the magazine considered that the shift in rhetoric did not go unnoticed by policymakers in Washington, who realize that Saudi Arabia wants to pay the price of normalization in the form of a stronger defense deal that will force the United States to protect the kingdom.

According to the magazine, Saudi Arabia also wants easier access to US weapons and US assistance for its civilian nuclear program, which includes uranium enrichment facilities on Saudi soil.

The magazine stated that the United States' support for the normalization of Arab-Israeli relations is not new, as the United States has provided Egypt with more than $50 billion in military aid since the establishment of peace between Egypt and Israel in 1979. It also noted Trump's pledge to sell

F-fighter aircraft. 35 through the Abraham deal to lure the UAE in, although the United States has yet to hand it over.

According to the magazine, however, Saudi demands go beyond money or weapons, and are unlikely to be met, noting that ratification of a formal defense treaty by the US Senate is rare.

She noted that US arms deals usually require congressional approval, at a time when a large number of lawmakers have expressed their fear of sending weapons to Saudi Arabia.

The magazine pointed out that the proposed Saudi nuclear program will be more controversial, as Saudi Arabia's insistence on enriching uranium, at a time when Iran has enriched it to a degree that almost reaches the level of making weapons, would raise fears of a regional arms race.
