    Baghdad today - Baghdad
On Thursday evening (July 19, 2023), the Presidency of the Republic announced the summoning of the US Ambassador to Baghdad, Alina Romanowski, regarding statements in the case of Patriarch Cardinal Louis Raphael Sako and the withdrawal of his Republican decree.
A presidential statement received by "Baghdad Today" stated that: "The Presidency of the Republic will summon the Ambassador of the United States of America in Baghdad, regarding this issue, in response to the statements made by Matthew Miller, a spokesman for the US State Department, against the Iraqi government regarding the withdrawal of Republican Decree No. (147). For the year 2013 of Patriarch Cardinal Louis Raphael Sako as Head of the Christian Church in Iraq.
For months, the dispute intensified between Sacco and Rayan al-Kildani, who has been subject to US sanctions since 2019 and is the leader of the Christian "Babylon" movement represented in parliament and the government and affiliated with the popular crowd.
This July, events took a new turn, with the President of the Republic, Abd al-Latif Rashid, withdrawing Decree No. 147 of 2013 granting the cardinal's functions as head of the Chaldean Church a legal status.
On Tuesday, July 18, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller denounced the "harassment of Cardinal Sako, the patriarch of the Chaldean Church," and expressed regret at his departure from Baghdad.
"We are concerned that the Cardinal's position as a respected leader of the Church is being harassed from many quarters," Miller said.
"We look forward to his safe return. The Iraqi Christian community is a vital part of Iraq's identity and an essential pillar of Iraq's history, which is full of diversity and tolerance," he added.
Sacco says the decree allows him to manage the church's property and endowments. On Saturday, he decided to leave the patriarchal residence in Baghdad and go to a monastery in the Kurdistan region, in protest against the withdrawal of the decree.
Sacco and Chaldani exchange accusations of trying to seize the capabilities of Christians in a country that has witnessed decades of conflict and suffers from corruption.
