    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Recently, headlines have emerged stating that Iraq may resort to buying water from Turkey to confront the drought crisis that strikes the country every year.
And on the impact of this, water expert Adel Al-Mukhtar commented, via “Baghdad Today”, Monday (August 14, 2023), about the possibility of concluding a deal between Iraq and Turkey, through which the latter sells water to its neighbors, saying: “We do not support this idea because the world is exposed to a phenomenon A major drought called (El Nino) will be followed by another phenomenon called (El Niña), which means heavy rain.
    "Nina" hits lean seasons
And "Nina" means that the winter of Iraq will be exceptionally rainy, and thus the drought crisis and the difficulties accompanying it will be resolved, according to the Mukhtar.
He added, "A rainy winter means another opportunity for the government and its ministry to overcome previous mistakes by canceling the idea of open agriculture, tourist irrigation, and other media terminology."
At the same time, he warned that continuing it would return the country to square one in the drought disaster after a year or two at the very least.
He pointed out that "without real rationalization that takes into account the water challenges in Iraq, it will not be possible to overcome the successive drought crises."
"We must deal with the agricultural file in a more realistic manner, as it consumes more than 85% of the water in the country," according to the water expert, who called for "the development of irrigation systems and the abolition of irrigation irrigation methods that most countries of the world left many years ago."
No dams, no solution to the problem
While experts believe that the persistence of this problem is linked to the failure to build new dams, others warn that Iraq will resort, after ten years, to buying water from Turkey and Iran at twice the amount of oil it sells now.
Approximately 80 billion cubic meters of water enter the region annually, but these quantities enter and exit the Gulf without benefiting from it due to the lack of dams.
7 million Iraqis are threatened with deprivation
It is noteworthy that Iraq suffers every year from a great scarcity of water as a result of building dams on rivers and tributaries of the upstream countries, the latest of which is the construction of the Ilisu Dam on the Tigris River by Turkey, which deprives Iraq of its agreed share and thus negatively affects agriculture and other uses of water.
With less rain and drought, Iraq has become the "fifth country in the world" most affected by climate change, as the Ministry of Environment recently announced.
In August 2022, several NGOs are warning that 7 million people are threatened with deprivation of water due to lack of access to rivers or due to drought.
