, the Office of Financial Supervision pointed the finger at the oil extraction operations for causing an increase in the number of cancer cases in Basra and the rest of the provinces, pointing out that it is the largest air pollutant that placed Iraq tenth in the list of the most polluted countries in the world.
"Al-Sabah" got the most prominent axes of the Bureau's report on the evaluation of the specialized performance of last June, related to the activities of ministries, departments and oil companies, and follow-up on reducing environmental pollution resulting from gas flaring and gas emissions from oil and gas extraction operations in oil fields located within the administrative borders of Basra Governorate.
The report stated that "the oil extraction operations throw environmental pollutants into the air resulting from burning the gas associated with the extracted fossil fuels, as the Basra Oil Company and foreign companies operating the fields in the province burned (54,52,53) percent of the associated gas for the years (2019, 2020). , 2021), what released into the air dangerous chemical compounds with high concentrations that are related to the increase in cancerous injuries, especially in the center of the governorate, which tops the number of injuries by 76.3 people per 100,000 in the year 2020,” indicating that the highest regions are also “Zubayr district, then Al-Qurna, According to the latest research study published in 2021 conducted by the University of Maysan on (the effect of air pollutants with hydrocarbons except for methane) on increasing the number of people with cancer, especially lung and bladder cancer.
The report indicated that "the concentrations of non-methane hydrocarbons, which are closely related to cancerous diseases, have increased in all monitoring points in the Basra oil fields, exceeding the permissible limits according to the national limit of (0.24PPM per 3 hours), as they reached (2.058PPM per 3 hours) in the southern Rumaila field." In addition to the suspension of all air quality monitoring stations and field air pollutant measurement devices of the Basra Environment Directorate, which amounted to 17 stations since 2019 and 7 other devices since 2013, which negatively affected the diagnosis of the environmental reality and the determination of pollutant concentrations

The report continued, "The field audit proved that a number of houses exceeded the taboos of some fields, such as the Nahran bin Omar field, which has been operating since 1975 as a result of population expansion in the surrounding areas belonging to the field and without real treatments," pointing to "the lack of commitment of the Basra Oil Company and foreign operating companies." 27 of 2009 and the Environmental Management System for Pollution Reduction, which obliges the parties whose activities result in environmental pollution to provide and use means and systems to monitor and treat pollution with the latest technologies to reduce gaseous emissions polluting the air, as there are no integrated treatment units to reduce Emissions resulting from burning associated gas,” noting that “at a time when gas can be invested in the production of electricity or as liquefied gas or in the petrochemical industries, as is the case in the two national efforts (Nahran bin Omar and Al-Tuba) oil fields, where they invest a percentage of(80 and 70) percent of the associated gas and export it to the Basra Gas Company.
The report recommended "referral of environmental pollution to the Council of Ministers for the non-compliance of the Basra Oil Company and the operating foreign companies with the provisions of Articles (9 and 21) of the Environment Protection and Improvement Law, to work on investing the associated gas to stop burning it and benefit from its economic return and reduce the pollution resulting from it, and to oblige the Basra Oil Company and the companies According to the terms of the oil service contract, foreign operators of the fields shall be equipped with modern and efficient flares, isolators, and trimmers, with the obligation of the foreign operator to provide pollution-reducing treatments and the use of skimming systems in accordance with the terms of the service contract.
The report confirmed that "Iraq is among the ten countries with the most air pollution, as a result of the emission of gaseous pollutants resulting from the work of the oil fields, and the resulting negative effects on the health of society, as the reports of the Iraqi Cancer Council recorded a continuous increase in the incidence of cancerous diseases annually, as it rose from 73.3 Infection in 2015 to 81.34 in 2019 per 100,000 inhabitants.
The Director of the Environment of Basra, Karim Abd Cheaper, told Al-Sabah: "There is a big gap in the terms of the contracts of the Basra Oil Company and foreign licensing companies, and between what is happening in reality," explaining that "the more than 600 torches surrounding Basra are among the distinguishing signs of this oppressed province."
