    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Yesterday, Sunday (October 1, 2023), the committee in charge of investigating the fire incident that broke out in the “Al-Haytham” events hall in Al-Hamdaniya district in Nineveh Governorate revealed the results of its investigations into the tragedy that killed more than 100 people, while it issued several recommendations to exempt a number of officials. In Nineveh Governorate.
Member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, Representative Yasser Iskandar, said today, Monday (October 2, 2023), that the committee’s report had three positive features.
In an interview with “Baghdad Today,” Iskandar said, “The Hamdaniya fire was a tragedy, especially with about 110 victims and dozens injured, but the committee’s report on the incident had three positives: professionalism, the speed of forming a fact-finding committee within 72 hours, and accuracy in the results.” Pointing out that “the positives provided messages of reassurance to public opinion.”
He added, "The committee's report is perhaps the first of its kind in terms of speed in reaching professional results in the first place without any procrastination. These are reassuring indicators because adopting specialization in managing any incident is a necessity with the fairness of the results that are reached."
The committee member pointed out, “The Al-Hamdaniya incident is a warning bell about the danger of overlooking public safety standards. It also reveals features of corruption that have not been highlighted in terms of granting vacations without tightening the procedures for implementing the standards.”
Yesterday, Sunday (October 1, 2023), the Minister of the Interior, Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, announced the results of the investigation into the fire that affected the “Al-Haitham” wedding hall in Al-Hamdaniya in Nineveh Governorate, northern Iraq, which led to the death and injury of dozens during a wedding party, indicating that the investigation committee "It recommends that the victims of the Hamdaniya incident be considered martyrs."
Al-Shammari said, in a press conference held in Baghdad, that the ill-fated Al-Haytham Hall had a capacity of only 500 people, and it contained highly flammable materials, in addition to the presence of fabrics in it that also helped in the rapid spread of the fire, while it lacked emergency doors.
The minister added, "The fire was caused by a fire source that came into contact with highly flammable materials, and the accident caused 107 deaths and 82 injuries," stressing "negligence on the part of the owners of the wedding hall." He stated that the owner of the hall was able to withdraw the surveillance camera recording device and carry it to Erbil.
Al-Shammari continued that it was decided to dismiss the mayor of Al-Hamdaniya district, the director of the municipality of Al-Hamdaniya district, the director of the tourism classification division in Nineveh, the director of the maintenance center of Al-Hamdaniya district, the director of the fire department in Nineveh, and the director of civil defense.
In addition, Fadel Abbas, a member of the Network Alliance in the Nineveh Plain, commented yesterday, Sunday (October 1, 2023), on the decisions of the committee charged with investigating the wedding party fire accident in the Hamdaniya district in Nineveh Governorate, while describing the decisions as an “important step.”
Abbas said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “it is one of the few times that we see speed in announcing the results of the investigation, and this matter is an important and bold step by the government, waiting for the implementation of the recommendations.”
He added, "The government is required to fully implement the recommendations, respond to the decisions of the investigative committee, and hold those who are negligent accountable to the strictest account."
Al-Hamdaniya district witnessed a tragedy last Tuesday night, when a fire broke out in the “Al-Haitham” wedding hall, engulfing those inside it. The incident ended with the deaths of approximately 110 people and the injury of more than 200 others.
