With the popularity of drug trade and drug abuse in Iraq, especially among young people, in a terrifying manner, the Iraqi Council of Representatives seeks to amend the anti-drug law, according to current data, as the law aims to tighten the punishment for traffickers, and the law has also been made lenient with drug users who seek hospitalization and undergo rehabilitation and treatment centers.
In this regard, a member of the Parliamentary Anti-Narcotics Committee, Representative Yasser Al-Husseini, confirmed that half of the provisions of the Anti-Narcotics Law have been resolved.
Al-Husseini said, “Workshops for representatives of the parliamentary legal, drug control, and health committees are continuing to hold their sessions in order to continue preparing integrated provisions for the anti-drug law through coordination with the competent agencies.”
He added, “The committee is trying to achieve several positives in the anti-narcotics law, most notably tightening the penalty against traffickers and withdrawing or reducing the penalty for drug users in order to push them comfortably to go to rehabilitation centers for the purpose of treatment,” pointing out that “half of the provisions of the law have been decided and are ready to be put forward for the second reading.” Then the vote is very close.”
He pointed out “the importance of the law as it will establish a comprehensive road map for a dangerous scourge that threatens Iraqi society in many ways, especially youth,” noting that “the committee seeks to create high flexibility in its provisions, leading to greater effectiveness in combating drugs and directing harsh penalties against traffickers.”
The Iraqi government seeks to limit the spread of drugs in the country by concluding cooperation agreements with neighboring countries, as the Al-Aqila Narcotics and Drug Control Committee discussed earlier (August 17, 2023) with the Jordanian Minister of Justice, Ahmed Al-Zayadat, judicial cooperation to combat drugs.
The media office of the Iraqi House of Representatives stated in a statement that “the Iraqi Parliamentary Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Control Committee held a meeting during its visit to the Jordanian capital, Amman, with the Jordanian Minister of Justice, Ahmed Al-Zayadat, and the senior staff in the ministry,” noting that “during the meeting, prospects for cooperation in the field of judicial procedures were discussed.” To fight the scourge of drugs and addiction.”
The statement added, “The Chairman of the Committee provided an explanation of the committee’s work, its goals and tasks, and how to contribute to increasing cooperation and coordination between Jordan and Iraq in the field of judicial and judicial procedures, exchanging experiences, and benefiting from the experiences of the judicial agencies in the two countries by uncovering the circumstances of drug trafficking and drug abuse crimes.”
The Iraqi Ministry of Health had previously announced, in November last year, that the country had transformed from a corridor for the transit of narcotic substances to a center for drug abuse and trafficking, considering in a statement that “the drug phenomenon is a sensitive and dangerous matter, and that the statistics of the Ministry of the Interior showed that the numbers of those accused of drug cases in prisons Whether through abuse or sales, it reached more than 13,000 inmates.”
She considered that “dangerous materials, such as (crystal), (hashish), and (opium), have become widespread in Iraq, so there is a need to develop strategic plans to confront them, especially since most traffickers target young university and school students.”
The authorities in the capital, Baghdad, recently revealed the seizure of narcotic substances amounting to 3 tons, amid warnings of the expansion of drug abuse among young people and teenagers and its impact on the security file throughout Iraq’s cities, most of which are crystal and Captagon pills.
