Shafaq News/ Breast cancer affects one out of every 100 people in Iraq, and the reason for its spread, like other cancerous diseases, is due to environmental pollution, especially in the southern regions, at a time when the Ministry of Health faces a shortage of diagnostic centers for early detection, in addition to its inability to provide treatments except For 30 percent of patients, which requires a major government renaissance in this field, according to a member of the Parliamentary Health and Environment Committee, Bassem Al-Gharabi.
October of each year is considered the month of awareness of the dangers of breast cancer around the world, through the implementation of several activities that encourage women to undergo early and periodic detection, while the activities use the color pink as their awareness slogan.
Breast cancer is what forms in the cells of the breasts, and comes after skin cancer in terms of being the most common type of cancer among women in the United States. Breast cancer affects both men and women, but it is more common among women.
The first in Iraq and the world
The spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Health, Saif Al-Badr, said in a statement last Tuesday, “Breast cancer ranks first among cancers in Iraq and the world, and on this basis we invite women over the age of 40 to undergo a mammogram and ultrasound examination.”
He points out that "aging increases the risk of breast cancer in addition to the genetic factor, as well as unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical activity, and other factors."
Al-Badr explains, “There are 53 breast cancer detection centers, including 17 centers and clinics distributed in the capital, Baghdad,” noting, “The Minister of Health directed the launch of the campaign to coincide with the Global Breast Cancer Challenge Month in October of each year.”
In this context, a member of the Parliamentary Health and Environment Committee, Bassem Al-Gharabi, says, “Cancer diseases are a global problem whose risks are increasing day after day, and in Iraq one case of breast cancer is recorded in every 100 people.”
    Spread of cancerous diseases
Regarding the causes of the recent spread of cancerous diseases, especially in the southern regions, Al-Gharabi, during his talk to Shafaq News Agency, attributes this to “pollution of the environment with carbon dioxide, and also the emission of methane gas associated with the partial combustion of the gas when extracting oil.”
He added, "In addition to the high rates of pollution and toxins in the water and soil pollution, in addition to radiation that exceeds 300,000 times the permissible limit, due to previous wars."
He emphasizes, “Early screening is necessary to detect cancerous diseases in general and treat them early, but if they reach the third or fourth level, then it is difficult to cure them except in rare cases.”
    Diagnostic centers
He pointed out that there is a shortage of diagnostic centers, noting that “these centers are rare in Iraq, as there are 4 centers for treating cancerous tumors for children, 5 centers for radiotherapy, and 23 centers for chemotherapy throughout Iraq,” stressing that “these centers are not enough, so he is forced to "Patients travel outside the country, which costs them large sums of money."
Regarding treatments, Al-Gharabi stated, “Treatments for cancer diseases are expensive, and that the Ministry of Health’s budget for 2023 amounts to about 10 trillion dinars, of which one trillion and 600 billion dinars have been allocated for various treatments, including cancer, so treatment may be provided to only about 30 percent of patients.” The rest bear the treatment at their own expense.”
He continued, "Accordingly, a major government renaissance should be undertaken to establish early screening centers, especially in new hospitals such as the German, Turkish, and Australian hospitals that are currently under construction, by redesigning some of their facilities and establishing early screening centers in them, to detect and treat the disease at its beginning." .
