The Holy Karbala Agriculture Directorate announced its winter plan, which will include planting more than (200) thousand dunums, led by the strategic wheat crop, which depends on lands irrigated by wells after achieving high production yields in its cultivation per dunum, while the directorate will distribute (66) pivot sprinklers to applicants. To acquire it.
The Director of Agriculture in Holy Karbala, Engineer Muhammad Jassim Al-Tayyar, confirmed in a statement to Noon News Agency that “the winter agriculture plan for the Holy Karbala Governorate was approved and the areas allocated for agriculture exceeded (200) thousand dunums, of which (185) thousand dunums are for cultivating the strategic wheat crop, which depends on the lands that It is irrigated by wells, and the use of modern methods of irrigation using pivot sprinklers in the governorate. About (26-30) dunums have been excluded from the plan for irrigated lands, and the cultivation of (11) thousand dunums of lands irrigated by rivers has been approved for the current year only, and the agricultural plan focuses on the crop “Wheat is what distinguished the Holy Karbala Governorate, where the production rate increased and the yield per dunum reached one and a half tons in some farms belonging to the Aoun Division in areas irrigated with pivot sprinklers.”
He added, "The Holy Karbala Agriculture Directorate initiated the first steps to support farmers in cooperation with the authorities supporting the Directorate by preparing seeds, including wheat seeds, for those wishing to purchase them. He also launched the distribution of the first batch of pivot sprinklers, as the Minister of Agriculture instructed the distribution of the Holy Karbala Governorate's share of (66) pivot sprinklers with a capacity (60 - 80) dunums, which are distributed according to controls granted to those wishing to acquire them, as the number of those wishing to acquire them in Karbala Governorate has reached (350) farmers, and they must meet the conditions specified by the Ministry, which include that the agricultural contract must be valid and that the approval of the Ministry of Water Resources be obtained. The lottery took place in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, the Governor of Karbala, and a team specialized in conducting the lottery from the Ministry, and the sprinklers reached capacity ( 80) dunums to the directorate’s stores, which began promoting the transactions of those entitled to complete the requirements for receiving them from the Agricultural Equipment Company.”
The pilot explained that “agricultural seeds consist of three types, and their prices are determined by the seed marketing company for those wishing to purchase them, who are nominated by the directorate to receive them from the company because there is a high rate of support from the ministry,” adding that “most of our farmers use high-quality, imported varieties, because about (40) (Percent of farmers receive subsidized seeds and others have stocks from the previous season’s planting, and the support process benefits many farmers because the support rate reaches (70) percent,” indicating that “the requirements for growing vegetables, such as nylon, are not available to us, and we were supporting farmers with fertilizers, which I expect that it will not be available this year because the support was allocated to water pivot sprinklers to increase production and yields and expand the optimal exploitation of desert lands. We have a plan to grow vegetables and winter crops by farmers in desert areas and (11) thousand dunams in areas irrigated by rivers. With regard to agricultural loans, they are granted To farmers by the Agricultural Bank and the Central Bank, and our mission is to promote farmers’ transactions, and so far no initiative has been launched except for Central Bank loans, which are granted at an interest rate of up to (4) percent for major projects, and currently there is an initiative to support farmers with loans that we are waiting for its launch by the Agricultural Bank.”
