    Under the patronage of the President of the Republic, Dr. Abdul Latif Gamal Rashid, the Office of the Presidency of the Republic, in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, held today, Tuesday, October 24, 2023, a workshop on (Climate Change).
    The workshop, which was attended by the President of the Republic, Dr. Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, the Minister of Environment, Nizar Amedi, the Chief of the Bureau, Kamel Al-Dulaimi, and a number of advisors and officials in the Presidency of the Republic, began with a fragrant recitation of the Holy Quran. Then the attendees stood to read Surat Al-Fatihah for the souls of the martyrs of Iraq and Palestine.
    Mr. President delivered a speech in which he touched on the significant effects of climate change and the water crisis on the environment and agriculture, indicating that the causes of water scarcity are due to several fundamental factors related to climate and the resulting lack of rainfall, high temperatures, drought, and desertification, as they are considered factors beyond human control. In this regard, he indicated that there are diligent efforts being made to use water harvesting to take advantage of rain and snowfall in areas of the region and to follow modern methods to store it in lakes through strategic storage and the construction of dams.
    The President of the Republic added that the other reason for water scarcity is related to Iraq's water sources that are located outside its geographical borders, and the upstream countries control the quantities of water flowing to the country through the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and their tributaries, indicating that there are no international or bilateral agreements to regulate the division of water between the upstream and downstream countries.
    The President of the Republic stressed that Iraq, through its relations with neighboring countries, in which the sources of rivers and tributaries are located, seeks to obtain a known and fair share that meets its water needs, as well as seeking to provide it with the operational plan of these countries and their projects to establish dams and projects on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers that must be That it does not affect Iraq's share.
    The President of the Republic identified the third reason for water scarcity as the need to improve the management of water use and follow modern methods in irrigation and agriculture, stressing the necessity of raising awareness and spreading a new culture of water conservation and including this in the school curricula to teach students from a young age to rationalize consumption, make optimal use of water, and combat waste.
    The Minister of Environment, Nizar Amidi, delivered a speech in which he pointed to the growing impact of climate change in Iraq, including increased drought, desertification, dust storms, shrinking agricultural areas, loss of ecosystems, and their social, health, and economic impacts, such as increasing poverty, migration from affected areas, and the direct threat to water, food, and community security. He stressed in this context that we are facing a threat. A serious threat to future generations.
    The Minister added that the Ministry of Environment has done a lot to confront these challenges, as it leads national efforts to address the effects of climate change, especially after Iraq officially joined the Paris Climate Agreement, as it completed the Iraqi National Contributions Document, which is the umbrella for climate action until 2030. Then the Chief of Staff of the Presidency of the Republic delivered a
    speech Kamel Al-Dulaimi gave a speech in which he touched on the serious effects of climate change on human life and health, now and in the future.
    He added that climate change facing the world as a whole and Iraq in particular would undermine what has been achieved by decades of progress in the field of health, especially since Iraq is one of the countries most vulnerable to the risks resulting from this severe environmental deterioration represented by its exposure to heat waves and irregular rainfall, in addition to drought and scarcity. Water and the resulting decline in the percentage of green spaces and the increase in land salinity and its negative impact on the economic situation of the country and its food security, indicating “the keenness of His Excellency the President of the Republic to pay attention to files directly related to the life of the citizen in accordance with its priorities of security, stability, water and climate.”
    The workshop activities then began, moderated by the Director General of the Department of Planning and Development in the Presidency of the Republic, Mr. Sakfan Jundi, and included discussion of research by a number of specialists related to climate change and its effects on Iraq, climate predictions in Iraq, as well as Iraq’s nationally determined contributions and climate action trends, in addition to Iraq’s preparations for the upcoming Conference of the Parties.
