{International: Al-Furat News} Israeli warplanes launched air strikes early Sunday near the largest hospital in Gaza, which is crowded with patients and tens of thousands of Palestinians.
Israel says Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, has a command center under Al-Shifa Hospital.
The raids came the day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a “next phase” in the Israeli war on Hamas, three weeks after Hamas’ deadly incursion into Israel on October 7.
Ground forces moved into Gaza over the weekend, while Israel bombed the Strip from the air, land and sea.
The bombing, which Gazans described as the heaviest of the war, cut off most communications in the Strip late Friday, isolating the besieged enclave's 2.3 million residents from the world.
Many people in Gaza restored communications early Sunday, according to the telecommunications company Paltel and the organization NetBlocks, which monitors corporate security and defends Internet freedom around the world, as well as confirmation from the ground.
Residents said recent air strikes destroyed most of the roads leading to Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, part of the northern half of the besieged enclave, which Israel has asked residents to evacuate.
Tens of thousands are taking refuge in Al-Shifa Hospital, which is also crowded with patients injured in the raids.
