The General Traffic Directorate revealed that the number of cars in Iraq, excluding the Kurdistan region, reached 7 million cars, including 4 million in Baghdad. She explained, “We, as a parliamentary services committee, have presented several recommendations to the executive authorities regarding the increasing number of cars,” noting that “there are workable solutions and others that are not workable and fall within the work of the General Traffic Directorate, the concerned authority, including dropping models and types of cars.”
For his part, the head of the Osool Foundation for Economic Development and Sustainable Development, Engineer Khaled Al-Jabri, indicated in an interview with Al-Sabah that “despite the government’s efforts to reduce traffic congestion through projects and bridges, the import of cars is increasing, and therefore it is When these projects are completed, the situation will remain as it is, so the General Traffic Directorate had to find radical solutions to break the traffic jam, such as implementing a sprinkler system or deporting cars to countries that need them.”
He explained, "The current number of cars requires updating the Scott-Wilson Road Plan, which has been incomplete for half a century, including the Fourth Ring Road, the Third Ring Road, the Muhammad Al-Qasim Bridge, and the railway lines, of which only 33% have been completed. Therefore, the plan prepared since 1971 and legislated must be completed."
