    Baghdad today - Baghdad
A security source revealed today, Saturday (November 4, 2023), that so-called weapons advertisements on social media platforms have disappeared by up to 85%.
The source said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", that "the buying and selling of firearms with their various names has taken its course to communication platforms, and advertisements for offers have appeared by some people in Diyala, especially Facebook," pointing out that "the matter has constituted a source of concern, especially since the sale process The purchases are made illegally and some of them are leaked to sleeper cells linked to extremist groups.
He added, "The formation of research and investigation committees and the activation of intelligence monitoring were accompanied by 4 specific operations in several areas of Diyala during recent months, which led to the arrest of some of those dealing in the file of buying and selling weapons and contributed to deterring weapons advertisements by reducing their activity by 85% within a short period."
He pointed out, "Weapons advertisements are present in almost all governorates, and they are another form of an illegal situation that has its security drawbacks, especially since some of them leaking to terrorist groups is very likely, according to all security reports."
The trade in various weapons is active on social networking sites in Iraq, especially Facebook, which has attracted many young people, in a phenomenon that warns of a continuing danger of weapons insurgency in the country, amid criticism of the security services for not taking security measures to reduce this phenomenon, which represents a security threat to society.
Arms traffickers have set up private groups on Facebook that promote the buying and selling of weapons, in which various types of light weapons, and sometimes even medium ones, are sold, with their prices determined. After agreeing electronically on the price, the exchange takes place in the place agreed upon by both parties.
Electronic arms trade has become widespread in recent years in Iraq after campaigns of raids and persecution of well-known arms stores in Baghdad and the provinces, which caused security restrictions on traffickers, which forced them to electronically promote the weapons they have.
Purchasing weapons through these groups requires joining them and the approval of their administrator, in order to browse the types of weapons offered in the group, and see their specifications and prices.
Successive Iraqi governments after 2003 made continuous promises and pledges to confine weapons to the state and subject violators to the authority of the law, but reality indicates the opposite, especially since the security measures in this regard are very weak compared to the activity of arms dealers.
