    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Friday (November 10, 2023), Advisor to the Prime Minister, Fadi Al-Shammari, affirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the diplomatic missions present in the country, revealing that “decisions will be taken soon to address attacks by Iraqi armed factions against American forces in the country.”
This is taking place following warnings issued by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to those factions against bombing American interests in the country, during his visit to Baghdad last week, while the government of Muhammad Shia al-Sudani is trying to control it.
Al-Shammari commented, in a statement to reporters in Baghdad, on the armed factions’ targeting of American bases in Iraq, stressing that “the Baghdad government was clear, through the speech it repeatedly confirmed in various platforms, that it is concerned with drawing up the formulations and contexts, and the method of managing files in internal and external issues.” There is a security movement and redeployment in recent days,” pointing out that “these attacks are condemned, and the government is obligated to protect diplomatic missions and security bases, and there is a set of decisions that will be taken soon to address this issue.”
Yesterday, Thursday, Al-Sudani made an unannounced visit to Erbil, which lasted several hours, during which he met with Kurdish leaders and discussed with them a number of important files.
His visit came after a visit he made to Tehran, in which he discussed a number of files, including the file of the presence of the Iranian Kurdish opposition in the provinces of the region, which Iraq disarmed and removed from Iran’s borders. He also discussed the file of attacks by Iraqi armed factions linked to Iran on American bases.
During Al-Sudani's visit to Erbil, the Harir base near Erbil International Airport was attacked by a drone claimed by the so-called "Islamic Resistance in Iraq", which officials considered "a clear message from those militias to continue the attacks."
For his part, Iraqi political affairs researcher Mujahid Al-Taie commented on the coincidence of the bombing of the “Harir” base with the Sudanese visit to Erbil, and said in his blog post on the “X” platform: “The region is receiving the Sudanese, and his allies (the armed factions) are sending drones behind him... How can the political parties trust him if his allies are working against him? Or was the issue not coordinated with him?!
The "Islamic Resistance in Iraq" group, which is a mixture of armed factions allied with Iran, most notably the "Al-Nujaba Movement" and "Ansar Allah Al-Awfiyya", announced the start of a new phase in "confronting the enemies in support of Palestine," stressing that the phase will be broader on their bases in the region.
During the past weeks, Iraqi armed factions launched attacks with drones and Katyusha rockets on the Harir and Ain al-Assad bases, and Camp Victoria, adjacent to Baghdad Airport, west of the Iraqi capital, in response to the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza and American support for it.
These three sites include hundreds of American military personnel and forces affiliated with the international coalition led by Washington, most notably the British and French.
