The Ministry of Interior warned of the expansion of the phenomenon of begging in the country, stressing that it has become a threat to the security of society, revealing that 975 beggars, including Asians, were arrested from the beginning of 2023 until the middle of this month.
The Ministry's Director of Organized Crime Operations, Brigadier General Hussein Al-Tamimi, said in an interview with Al-Sabah: The phenomenon of begging has become a major threat to the security of society, especially since there are many crimes involved in this phenomenon, including human and drug trafficking, not to mention other crimes committed by these experienced gangs. In begging.
He added that his department, in accordance with the importance of the matter, has launched a major campaign with the participation of all sectors since the beginning of this year and is continuing until now, including all governorates of the country, revealing that the operations have resulted, as of the middle of this month, in the arrest of 975 beggars, including Asians, who enter the country during visits. Al-Tamimi considered begging a form of human exploitation and trafficking, according to the United Nations Convention against Organized Crime, noting that in recent times there have been multiple categories included in this activity, including infants, young children, and young people, in addition to women, the elderly, and the disabled, and the matter has reached the point of imprisoning people with special needs as well. He stressed that there is coordination with the concerned authorities, such as the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, to take the necessary measures to reduce them.
It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Labor had implemented new procedures to reduce begging in the country, which includes providing monthly financial allocations to them, by preparing a database for them in coordination with the Ministry of Interior so that their social cases can be reviewed and they are included in the lists of beneficiaries of the social welfare network.
