The representative of the Parliamentary Extension Bloc, Alaa Al-Rikabi, revealed on Thursday that the outgoing Speaker of the House of Representatives, Muhammad Al-Halbousi, disrupted an extraordinary session to expel the American Ambassador, Alena Romanowski, from Baghdad, against the backdrop of what he described as the “genocide” to which she was being subjected. Palestinians in Gaza at the hands of Israel, supported by the United States.
According to Al-Rikabi, who spoke, more than 50 signatures were collected to hold an extraordinary session on what is happening in Gaza, but the Presidency of Parliament blocked the request.
He added: “We submitted the request more than three weeks ago, based on Article 28 of the Council’s internal regulations, to hold an extraordinary session, and there was no constitutional right for the Presidency of the House of Representatives to reject the request.”
Al-Rikabi pointed out that “the outgoing Speaker of the House of Representatives postponed the request of 52 representatives and refused to hold an extraordinary session to discuss the genocide committed by the Zionist entity in Gaza, with the support of countries, led by the United States of America.”
He stressed that “the request included informing the American ambassador to leave Iraqi territory, and to close the diplomatic mission in Baghdad, in protest against the genocide taking place in Gaza.”
Al-Rikabi added, saying: The first and second deputy speakers of the House of Representatives argued that the request was submitted to the outgoing president by decision of the Federal Court. We, in turn, will resubmit the request to the two representatives and present the argument to them and await the result and the date of the special session regarding what is happening in Gaza, and the closure of the American embassy in Baghdad".
Late last October, the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, called on the federal government and parliament to vote on a decision to close the United States embassy in Iraq “in support” of the Palestinians.
At that time, the positions of a number of members of the House of Representatives regarding Al-Sadr’s call differed. Some welcomed it and announced their intention to collect parliamentary signatures in this regard, and others saw that severing diplomatic relations with countries with which they disagreed was not a solution, but rather might worsen the situation further, stressing the need to support the government’s measures in Supporting the Palestinian cause instead of embarrassing it.
