President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid discussed, today, Saturday, with the Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme, Cindy Hensley McCain, humanitarian aid and food security.
The presidency said in a statement received by Mawazine News: “On the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Summit (COP28), the President of the Republic, Abdel Latif Gamal Rasheed, met with the Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Program, Cindy Hensley McCain,” noting, “ In the meeting, which was attended by Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein, Environment Minister Nizar Amedi, and World Food Program Country Director in Iraq Ali Al-Quraishi, topics related to humanitarian aid and food security were discussed.
The President of the Republic referred to "the wars, sieges, and terrorism that Iraq faced, which lasted for decades and caused a decline in services in many sectors, as well as climate change and its repercussions on agriculture, water resources, and life in general."
The President explained, "The importance of working to expand the horizons of cooperation between Iraq and the World Food Program and adopting proactive plans to confront the risks of climate change, as well as activating the role of international organizations, especially in the humanitarian file of the displaced, and ending their tragic situation by returning to their areas after rehabilitation and reconstruction."
The statement added, "The meeting discussed the distinguished and extended cooperation relations between Iraq and the World Food Program and the mutual keenness to strengthen these relations, in addition to regional files, most notably developments in the situation in the Gaza Strip, where the President pointed to the deterioration of the humanitarian conditions in the Strip as a result of the ongoing aggression, stressing the necessity of Ensuring the delivery of the largest possible amount of aid to citizens. He also stressed the continuation of Iraqi efforts with various regional and international parties to push towards stopping the aggression, providing aid to the Palestinian people, and establishing their independent state.
