Parliamentarian: The number of candidates for the Presidency of Parliament rises to 8, and the selection is subject to it

Representative for the Coordination Framework, Thaer al-Jubouri, announced yesterday, Tuesday, that the number of candidates for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives had increased to 8, while indicating that deciding the candidate for the position may be delayed until after the provincial council elections.
Al-Jubouri explained in a press statement that “the list of names nominated by the Sunni forces for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives has risen to 8 so far, pointing out that the House of Representatives is in a legislative recess and there is no harm in delaying the nomination of the candidate until after the local elections scheduled for the eighteenth of this month.” .
He added, “The approval of the coordination framework is essential in determining the identity of the candidate for the presidency of the House of Representatives, especially since voting requires votes within the Council,” explaining that “the framework set important criteria for the candidate, most notably that his role be effective in legislating laws and protecting the interests of Iraqis in general and that he perform His parliamentary duties, especially since he faces multiple challenges, especially with regard to the issue of legislating laws that serve all components without exception.”
There were conflicting reports about the list of candidates received by the coordination framework - on Monday - and the media published various lists of names, but the list promoted by sources includes: Salem Al-Issawi, a member of the Khamis Al-Khanjar Party, and Shalan Al-Karim and Abdul Karim Abtan, who are from the Al-Halbousi Party.
There is another list that includes other candidates, including Ziad Al-Janabi, Yahya Al-Mohammadi, and Khaled Al-Daradji. With this conflict, leaks indicate that the political forces: the coordinating framework and the Sunni parties, will go to the voting session, divided, without a clear agreement on the candidate.
Article 12 of the internal regulations of the Iraqi Council of Representatives stipulates that “if the position of Speaker of the Council or any of his two deputies becomes vacant for any reason, the Council shall elect by an absolute majority a successor in the first session it holds to fill the vacancy in accordance with the controls of political balances between the blocs.”
Last Wednesday, the Iraqi Council of Representatives held a session that included on its agenda the election of a new Speaker of the Council, but it quickly postponed the vote, due to the lack of political consensus.
