    Baghdad today - Baghdad
The Iraqi Ministry of Environment announced today, Wednesday (December 13, 2023), that the Dubai Declaration did not include an obligation to reduce the use of fossil fuels.
Director of Environmental Changes at the Ministry, Yousef Muayyad Al-Hadithi, said in a brief statement received by Baghdad Al-Youm, “Agreement on the Dubai Climate Declaration is now being reached.”
Al-Hadithi stressed, “The declaration did not include any mandatory statements related to fossil fuels, according to what was negotiated by the Iraqi negotiating delegation within two weeks.”
Today, Wednesday, the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP28 reached an agreement that could push countries for the first time to shift away from the use of fossil fuels to avoid the worst effects of climate change.
In his speech at the United Nations Climate Summit at Expo Dubai, Sultan Al Jaber, President of the Conference of the Parties COP28, stressed, “The world needed a new path of action, and by focusing on our main goal, we achieved that path.”
For his part, economic expert Nabil Al-Marsoumi said in a blog post followed by “Baghdad Today” that “regardless of how realistic the call launched by the COP28 negotiations on climate change aimed at reducing fossil fuel consumption and production, in a fair, orderly and just manner, in order to achieve neutrality... Carbon emissions by 2050, this constitutes an early and severe warning to rentier countries, especially to countries that depend entirely on oil, most notably Iraq.”
