Two security officials said today, Monday (December 25, 2023), that two Kuwaiti citizens were kidnapped during a hunting trip in a desert area in Iraq, yesterday, Sunday, while security forces began a large-scale search for the two, according to Reuters.
Reuters quoted a senior police officer as saying that the kidnapping took place in a desert area between Anbar and Salah al-Din governorates. The two officials said that preliminary investigations showed that one of the hunters’ vehicles was attacked by gunmen and contact with the two Kuwaitis was cut off.
The two security sources added that the sprawling desert area is known to be a hiding place for still active ISIS terrorist groups.
No party immediately claimed responsibility for the incident, and hunters from the wealthy Gulf countries often make trips to Iraq's southern and western desert in search of falcons.
One of the police officers told Reuters, "The two Kuwaiti fishermen were moving in a vast desert area, which is very dangerous because ISIS is still active there. We want to know first if they are still alive."
Earlier today, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the Iraqi Foreign Minister "expressed great interest and keenness to know the fate of the citizen, indicating that the Iraqi authorities are currently conducting, at the highest levels, an investigation in this regard to uncover the circumstances of the disappearance."
The Kuwaiti Foreign Minister explained that "the Ministry is closely following up with the Embassy of the State of Kuwait in Iraq and through it with the relevant Iraqi authorities to reveal the fate of the citizen and ensure his safety."
