The desert area is known to be a hiding place for still active ISIS groups. Two
Kuwaiti citizens were kidnapped during a hunting trip in a desert area in Iraq, two security officials said on Monday, adding that security forces had begun a large-scale search for the two.
A senior police officer confirmed that the kidnapping took place in a desert area between Anbar and Salah al-Din governorates.
The two officials said that preliminary investigations showed that one of the fishermen's vehicles was attacked by gunmen, and communication with the Kuwaitis was cut off on Monday.
The two security sources added that the sprawling desert area is known to be a hiding place for groups still active from the Islamic State.
No party immediately claimed responsibility for the incident. Hunters from wealthy Gulf countries often make trips to Iraq's southern and western desert in search of falcons.
A police officer told Reuters, “The two Kuwaiti fishermen were moving in a vast desert area, which is very dangerous because ISIS is still active there.” “We want to know first if they are still alive.”
