The General Directorate of Social Reform of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs in the Kurdistan Region revealed the imminent opening of three directorates of social reform in Halabja in Sulaymaniyah and the independent Soran administrations in Erbil and Zakho in Dohuk, while specifying the achievements achieved and the numbers of inmates in correctional prisons and those released in the region during last year.
The Director General of Corrections in the Kurdistan Region, Ihsan Abdul Rahman, told Al-Sabah: It is part of the directorate’s plan for the current year to open three social reform directorates, the first in Halabja in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, in addition to two in the
independent Soran departments in Erbil and Zakho in Dohuk.
He revealed that the number of inmates who entered correctional prisons in the region amounted to 7,378 inmates, noting that 6,520 inmates were released during the past year.
Abdul Rahman pointed out that there are 402 students in various educational levels who are completing their studies from prison inmates who were conditionally released, noting that the Kurdistan Regional Government grants home leave to inmates, which is the first of its kind and is the only practice in the region.
He stated that during the past year, 287 convict prisoners visited their families, explaining that legal seclusion was achieved through families visiting convicts inside prisons, as it included 5,716 inmates.
