    Economy News - Baghdad
The Minister of Construction, Housing and Public Municipalities, Benkin Rekani, confirmed today, Wednesday, that the government continues to support local industries and protect them under the Product Protection Law. While Iraq needs a revolution in the building materials industry, he stressed the necessity of adopting new patterns in construction to cover the market’s need.
Rekani said in his speech during the first scientific conference of the Department of Research and Construction 2024, “The construction sector has developed significantly in all aspects, including speed, aesthetics, function performance, and thermal insulation.”
He added, "Iraq is still adopting traditional construction, knowing that our country is one of the countries that most needs a new style of construction, due to temperatures reaching record levels as well as snow in the Kurdistan region, in addition to the dusty atmosphere that requires modern construction." He stressed, "Our country needs new patterns of construction to cover the large gap in the market's need, whether for housing units or new cities."
He explained, "Scientific research requires great potential and the provision of devices and equipment, some of which require years to be transformed into models for broader development."
He expressed his pride in "the presence of competencies in his ministry, who have contributed over many years to the development of building materials," stressing that "some competencies are still working in several sectors, and the ministry seeks to provide support to them."
He pointed out that "the government continues to support local industries and protect them in accordance with the Product Protection Law," indicating that "there are phenomena that we were not aware of, but when working on projects we paid attention to them, including the existence of a shortage of many necessary materials, and that existing laboratories cannot cover Projects.
He pointed out, "Through a study on the needs of the new residential cities whose contracts were signed, the cement shortage was diagnosed, and that local factories cannot cover the demand. As for the other materials, namely doors, windows, etc., they do not exist, and must be imported from abroad."
Rekani concluded by saying: "The Iraqi market needs traditional or advanced building materials. If the construction movement continues at the same current pace, we need a revolution in factories for building materials."
He continued, "Every factory added will provide hard currency to Iraq and employ a large number of the country's people. This is the main goal of the ministry and the government, to provide job opportunities and rely on local production."
