The first Mosul “hackathon”: vertical farming via the Internet and dozens of solutions to water problems

More than 45 participants interested in the field of agriculture and the environment presented 11 projects and innovations for the purpose of developing agriculture in Nineveh, through a “hackathon” in Mosul, in which academics, engineers in agricultural technology and techniques, and veterinary specialists participated.
The event discussed solutions such as using organic fertilizers instead of chemical ones, reducing water consumption, and vertical agriculture to save space, as part of the “Agricultural Innovation Hackathon” project established by the “Mosul Space” Foundation in the Mohandiseen area on the left side, which is the first of its kind in Umm al-Rubaieen.
Details:
“Hackathon” is a Western word from the word marathon, which means race, and “hack” means innovation. It is a project supported by the European Union and implemented by the International Trade Center in cooperation with the “SAVI” project, which works to develop agricultural value. A financial prize of half a million was awarded. dinars for the best three proposed projects, in addition to awarding a prize of two million and 500 thousand dinars in the event that each project is developed in the future.
Hanaa Al-Hassan - Project Supervisor:
This is the first hackathon held in Nineveh related to the agricultural sector, in which a group of young men and women were trained to address several problems in terms of water scarcity, its management, and agricultural value chains, and they presented solutions to them.
At the end of the training, each team presented its own project, and the Mosul Space Foundation will maintain constant communication with them in the future with the participants in providing them with technical support through their existing experts.
Zaid Khader, official of the team that won the first prize:
We discussed the problem that farmers suffer from in how to market the tomato crop and its low prices, especially since Nineveh produces an abundant crop of it annually.
Our idea is to take the crop from the farmer and turn it into food and profit commodities, such as drying tomatoes under the sun and selling them in the form of rings or keeping them inside olive oil cans, similar to what is done in Italy, as well as making tomato powder that is used in the production of broth, and another product that will be medicinal and contribute. In treating cancer.
Muhammad Al-Naqeeb, responsible for the team that won the second prize:
We presented a special project in vertical hydroponic agriculture, which is based on reducing water consumption by farmers by 90% through the use of a technical device that works via the Internet, and it was designed by members of our team of engineers in agriculture and technology.
Zakaria Amer - Participant:
I am working on a project for greenhouses that are managed automatically without human intervention using sensors that operate via the Internet by using a special application to monitor the process of growing plants, amounts of water, temperature, and light.
I benefited from the training by not thinking in only one direction and having ideas with multiple aspects that keep pace with the requirements of customers and the labor market.
