Iraq decides to reduce customs duties on imported livestock by 50%

On Tuesday, the Council of Ministers decided to reduce customs duties on imported calves and sheep by half, in an attempt to reduce meat prices in the markets, while authorizing the Governor of Basra to contract with the coalition of companies implementing the seawater desalination project.
The Cabinet Media Office stated in a statement that the Council decided, during its eleventh regular session, to reduce the amount of customs duty on imported live animals, such as calves, cows, and sheep for slaughtering or breeding purposes, by 50% of the current duties.
He stated that with this reduction, fees will become 2% for calves, cows and sheep imported for slaughter purposes, and 5% for calves, cows and sheep imported for breeding purposes, provided that the decision will be reviewed after one year.
He added that the Council agreed to authorize the Governor of Basra to negotiate and sign the framework agreement with the coalition of companies implementing the seawater desalination project in the province. So that the consortium of companies can complete plans and designs and conduct preliminary surveys for the project, provided that this does not entail financial obligations for the governorate.
As well as transferring the contractual obligations for consulting work for the aforementioned project, with the consultant (ILF-Consultant), from the Ministry of Construction and Housing, to Basra Governorate; So that the consulting company can complete its contractual duties regarding the project, and authorize the Governor of Basra to add the legal consulting component if required, in coordination between it and the Ministry of Planning.
