    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Recently, there have been clear movements by Washington's arms in Iraq, represented by the US Ambassador to Baghdad, Alena Romanowski, and the UN envoy, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, by holding meetings with many political leaders in the country, while the files of the Kurdistan region were absent from these meetings, especially related to the recent Federal Court decisions.
    International interventions
Professor of Political Science at the University of Baghdad, Iyad Al-Anbar, commented today, Monday (April 1, 2024), on the movements and meetings of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, and the American Ambassador to Baghdad, Alena Romanowski, with political leaders during the past two days.
Al-Anbar told “Baghdad Today” that “the movements and meetings of Plasschaert and Romanovsky with political leaders have become an almost regular issue in the Iraqi situation,” indicating that “until now there is no specific file that can be said to not be focused on, as all files are the subject of research.” "It requires UN and international interventions."
Regarding the failure to discuss the Kurdistan Region elections file and the decisions of the Federal Court during these meetings, Al-Anbar says, “The issue is very complex, as the decision of the Federal Court made the issue outside the political agreements, and this is what makes there no horizon for discussing this issue during the meetings of Plasschaert and Romanovsky.”
    Extension of UNAMI's work
Regarding the recent decline in Plasschaert’s movements and the return of her activity again, the professor of political science at the University of Baghdad explained that “the absence of a political event made her activities decline and reduced her mobility.”
He pointed out that "there is an issue that will be raised in the coming days, which is the extension of the work of the UNAMI mission in Iraq, and for Plasschaert to remain in this position," noting that "this is among the reasons for the decline in its activity and meetings with Iraqi leaders."
Earlier, the head of the State of Law coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, confirmed in a televised interview that “the American ambassador and the representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations are moving outside the permitted circle.”
Meanwhile, a member of the Al-Fatah Alliance, Ayed Al-Hilali, confirmed that the movements undertaken by Washington’s ambassador to Iraq are not the result of today or yesterday, but rather they are suspicious and strange movements, as the ambassador has been making movements inside Iraqi homes for quite some time, visits various parties, and establishes relations with all social, cultural, and even tribal segments. The meetings are held in an undiplomatic manner and far from international norms .
Meanwhile, political affairs specialists believe that “US Ambassador Elena Romanowski’s meetings with political and security leaders confirm that Washington is planning to put pressure on the political process, especially since this figure specializes in changing regimes away from the use of apparent force.”
