The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs announced a major campaign to count the number of violating foreign workers during the coming period, and while it counted the number of licensed ones in Iraq, it confirmed the imposition of measures to support national workers and raise their efficiency in the labor market.
Ministry spokesman Najm Al-Uqabi said in an interview followed by Al-Mada: “The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has established a new mechanism for the entry of foreign workers into Iraq, as it has been limited to the entry of skilled workers into the private sector.”
He added, “The Ministry asked employers in Iraq who wish to employ workers to submit a request to the Vocational Training Department and for the Department to enter the database to indicate the availability of the required people who suit the labor market.”
He continued, "This contributed to providing Iraqi workers ready for employers and reducing the demand for foreign workers, whose employment requires attaching an experience certificate certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or from the embassy of the country to which the worker also belongs."
Al-Aqabi added, “The Ministry distributed questionnaire forms to investment companies contracting with the state, through which the desired specialization is requested in order to train national workers in light of the specialization requested by the companies, and our ambition is for national workers to be more than foreign workers,” noting that “there is a proposal that will be worked on.” For foreign investment companies, the national workforce must not be less than 70%, compared to 30% foreign labor, and this proposal was presented by the Minister of Labor, Ahmed Al-Assadi, as there were joint committees with the Ministry of Interior in order to invest in the energies of the national workforce.
He continued, “There are one million and 700 thousand graduate job seekers of both genders in the ministry’s database,” pointing out that “the ministry will also conduct expanded inspection campaigns on foreign companies and investment companies contracting with the state to reduce unlicensed foreign workers.”
He pointed out that “we have put in place very strict procedures, as the violating employer bears full responsibility, as there are many cases that have been referred to the labor court.”
He stressed that: “There are inspection committees that continue to conduct visits to Baghdad, and the governorates have also been directed to conduct these campaigns. We also have a major campaign during the coming period against foreign investment companies in order to count the number of violating workers in these companies and correct their legal path, as we obtained the approval of the Prime Minister.” To request employers to correct the legal path of the workers they have through the electronic window, approximately 12,000 employers have applied, see 9,000 of them.
He confirmed that “more than 42 thousand foreign workers obtained a work permit from the Ministry of Labor.”
