{International: Al-Furat News} An informed source said that the American envoy to the Middle East contacted the foreign ministers of Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the Emirates and Qatar to ask them to deliver a message to Iran urging it to reduce tension with Israel in the wake of a suspected Israeli air strike on an Iranian consulate in Syria.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Brett McGurk asked officials to communicate with the Iranian Foreign Minister to convey the message that Iran must calm down with Israel, and they did so.
The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced yesterday, Wednesday, that the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, Qatar, and Iraq spoke by phone with the Iranian Foreign Minister and discussed the tension in the region.
The White House declined to comment.
Axios was the first to report on McGurk's calls.
Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said that Israel "must be punished and will be punished" against the backdrop of a raid in Damascus that resulted in the martyrdom of seven members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
Among them was Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior leader in the Quds Force.
Israel did not confirm responsibility for the attack on Damascus, but the Pentagon said it did.
