    Baghdad today - Diyala
A source close to the State of Law coalition confirmed, today, Thursday (April 11, 2024), the success in winning 6 votes in support of its candidate, Muayyad al-Obaidi, for the position of governor of Diyala within 72 hours.
The source said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "The State of Law coalition's discussions with forces representing the winning lists in the Diyala Council succeeded, and within 72 hours, they won the votes of 6 members of the 15-member Council through flexibility and interaction with the political givens," pointing out that “What was achieved broke a stalemate that lasted for weeks.”
The source added, "The State of Law coalition may reach the stage of achieving a quorum after the blessed Eid al-Fitr in light of the preparation for three important and decisive meetings with Sunni and Kurdish forces in order to invite them to participate in the formation of the local government of Diyala despite the complexities and differences between them," pointing out that "the survival of Lists of the Shiite or Sunni opposition are on the table and very likely, but the coalition seeks to create a context that gives room for the formation of a government that represents all political forces.”
He pointed out that "the position of the Sunni forces with their various wings supports the formation of the Diyala government as quickly as possible while ensuring the rights of their effective presence in the government as an important component," stressing that "many of the complications have begun to disappear amid the high flexibility shown by the forces to facilitate the task of forming the local government."
It is noteworthy that the State of Law coalition announced, on Tuesday (April 9, 2024), the official start of discussions to form the Diyala local government.
Coalition member and head of the Sunni Council of Diyala, Turki Al-Atbi, said in an interview with “Baghdad Al-Youm,” that “our coalition has officially begun holding discussions with the political forces that have representation in the Diyala Council, including the framework forces, the Sunni forces, and the rest of the other forces, as part of efforts to achieve a quorum to hold an official session.” As soon as possible".
He added, "All forces, without exception, were informed that the State of Law coalition's candidate for the position of governor of Diyala is Muayad al-Obaidi, a well-known personality with whom all forces interacted positively. However, the discussions are not without complications, especially since there are Sunni-Sunni disputes over the presidency of the council and the other positions." ".
He pointed out that "the State of Law coalition is aware of the complexities of Diyala and has a road map in order to proceed with the formation of its local government according to a mechanism that does justice to all its political forces without exception and seeks to develop broader participation in the decision."
The Diyala Council still has not held its session dedicated to resolving the positions of the Provincial Council and naming the governor for the next four years, as tribal and political disputes continue regarding the identity of the next governor.
