    Baghdad today - Erbil
Today, Friday (April 12, 2024), the Kurdish expert on security affairs, Saeed Mustafa, confirmed the Kurdistan region’s concern and fear about the possibility of Iranian retaliation and retaliation against Israel, after its attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.
Mustafa said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that, “During the past months, Erbil has experienced a state of security confusion, as a result of the targeting of the city by Iran and the armed factions in Iraq.”
He added, "With increasing talk about a possible Iranian response to Israel's bombing of Tehran's embassy in Syria, there are great fears that Erbil will be a scene for response and retaliation operations by targeting American military bases, consulates, diplomatic headquarters, companies, and others."
It is noteworthy that, on Tuesday (April 2, 2024), member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Wafa Muhammad Karim, expressed his fears that Erbil would be affected by the Iranian response to the recent Israeli attacks.
Karim said in an interview with "Baghdad Today" that "because of the Iraqi government's positions and its lack of an appropriate response to the repeated Iranian attacks, Erbil is an easy prey for Iran every time it is bombed without accountability."
He added, "Iran cannot respond to the recent Israeli attacks that targeted the consulate headquarters in the Syrian capital, Damascus. Therefore, there is a fear that the response will be against innocent people and civilians in Erbil, under the pretext of targeting Israeli interests and Mossad networks."
On Monday (April 1, 2024), Israeli aircraft targeted the Iranian consulate building in Damascus, causing major damage to it, in addition to its neighboring buildings.
The Iranian ambassador to Damascus, Hussein Akbari, also confirmed that 5 to 7 people, including Iranian military advisors who were hosted by the embassy, were killed as a result of the Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate building.
