Mawazine News - Baghdad
The phenomenon of social media influencers in Iraq, especially those known as “bloggers,” seems far beyond the boundaries of girls and women who are interested in the latest fashions, love of appearance, and earning money from social media ads.
The killing of the “blogger,” known as “Umm Fahd,” yesterday (Friday), sparked all the questions and doubts circulating locally about the limits and impact of the phenomenon on the political and security space in the country, and brought to mind talk of “physical killings” that are usually associated with “the end of roles.” Or “danger and revealing secrets” that must be put to an end.
In the eyes of large segments of Iraqis, this phenomenon has become linked to influential figures in the political and security system by virtue of what is said to be “servant” relationships between some of them with these women and girls, and the influence they have on some people of influence and power.
However, these relationships were not always “safe” from severe and fatal fluctuations, in the event that one of the two parties to the relationship violated or neglected the terms and scope of “serving,” especially if that relationship was exploited to “serve” potential opponents of this political, security, or political figure. That.
The relationship between the “blogger” and the influential figure has become a source of ridicule and criticism by many in what has become known as the “dark world.” The blogger and program presenter on the official “Iraqiya” channel, Saleh Al-Hamdani, wrote on the “X” platform: “We need a memorandum of understanding to break the connection between Officers and (Finestat),” referring to influencers on social networking sites.
How was the assassination done?
“Umm Fahd” was killed in front of her house in the upscale Zayouna neighborhood in eastern Baghdad, and a circulating video showed the killer riding a motorcycle heading to the victim as she was getting into her car, and it also showed him collecting “empty envelopes” for bullets from his silencer pistol from the crime scene, in An indication of his “professionalism” in assassination operations, according to many.
It is widely reported that the perpetrator confiscated her personal mobile phone, which is believed to contain a collection of films and photos of influential political and security figures, but it is difficult to verify this while the authorities say that the case is still under investigation.
For years, Umm Fahd appeared on her social media platforms displaying jewelry and luxury cars. She also shared snapshots of elite restaurants and public events with her fans.
Bloggers circulated a picture of a person who was said to have carried out the assassination, while the Ministry of Interior did not issue a statement confirming this, but it announced the formation of a specialized work team to “identify the circumstances of the killing of a woman known on social media by unknown persons in the Zayouna area in the capital, Baghdad.”
One of the sources who was connected to the investigation into the killing of “model” Tara Fares in September 2018 said, “The investigation of this type of crime reaches a specific threshold, then orders come from higher authorities and it is closed forever.”
The source added to Asharq Al-Awsat, followed by Mawazine News, that “most of the women described in this way have relationships with senior officers and influential people who do not allow investigations into their killing to cross red lines that they had set.”
Analyst and journalist Falah Al-Mishaal wrote in a blog post on “X”: “The elimination of bloggers began after scandals began to reveal many names that fell into their nets, including big heads of officials and politicians.”
It has become common for years, at the popular level, that “bloggers” have the ability to influence “decision-making,” just as they have the ability to stop it, given their strong influence on decision-makers.
The assassination of “Umm Fahd” came days after a dispute with the model Dalia Naeem, who is also known on social networking sites. “Umm Fahd” appeared during a “video” threatening to expose Naeem by publishing pictures of her with the official in charge of media and relations and the “Warbage” campaign. "Degrading content" in the Ministry of Interior, Major General Saad Maan, which prompted the Ministry of Interior to conduct investigations into this, which was followed by the dismissal of Major General Maan and other officers linked to "extortion" networks in cooperation with the "Blograt and Fashionstat" groups.
The spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Major General Yahya Rasoul, announced on March 20, “that we had identified members of a network within the security institution that works on using social networking sites (pages under pseudonyms) to blackmail the security institution and insult its symbols.”
“Umm Fahd” was imprisoned in January 2023, on charges of indecent content, before she was released and went to her usual work a few weeks later.
The “Umm Al-Lul” crisis,
and a few days before the killing of “Umm Fahd” (last Tuesday), the crisis of the show dancer known as “Umm Al-Lul” broke out, when many people circulated the news of her obtaining a diplomatic passport, which prompted the Ministry of the Interior to deny this, and the Interior spokesman said: The Security Media Cell, Brigadier General Miqdad Miri, said in a statement, “The Directorate of Civil Status, Passports and Residence did not grant any diplomatic or special passport or service to the person called (Umm Al-Lul).”
Merry pointed out that “no letter has arrived from the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs in this regard.”
Last week, the judiciary issued a simple prison sentence for 4 months against “Umm Al-Lul” after the diplomatic passport uproar. The judiciary said that “the ruling was issued on charges of degrading content for the crime of making and publishing several pictures and films containing obscene and immoral statements.”
Defense instead of accountability
In conjunction with the death of “Umm Fahd” and the “Umm Al-Lul” crisis, another crisis erupted when one of the “models” was seen on an airstrip on the ninety-third anniversary of the founding of the Air Force, but the Ministry of Defense adopted the “defense strategy” instead of recognition. error and hold those who are negligent accountable.
The Directorate of Media and Moral Guidance said in a statement yesterday (Friday), in response to the criticism raised, that it is an invitation to all local media outlets, including local and international channels and agencies, social media, and those with good content, including influencers, to attend this ceremony for media coverage.
She added: “We all know the great role that influential Iraqi young men and women played in supporting the heroes of the army and the rest of the Iraqi security forces in their battle against terrorism, and the young woman whose video clip was circulated was one of the attendees of this ceremony to support our heroic forces.”
