    Shafaq News/ The Iraqi and Syrian Interior Ministers announced on Sunday the signing of a security cooperation memorandum between the two countries that “included five axes.”


    The Iraqi Minister of Interior, Abdul Amir al-Shammari, said in a joint press conference held today with the Syrian Minister of Interior, Muhammad Khaled al-Rahmoun, at the ministry’s headquarters in Baghdad, and attended by a Shafaq News Agency correspondent, that a bilateral meeting was held with the minister and his accompanying delegation, indicating that the meeting witnessed the discussion of all Items on the agenda that resulted in the signing of a memorandum for joint security cooperation between the two countries.
    Al-Shammari stated that the memorandum included a number of articles related to cooperation between the two countries, most notably cooperation in the field of combating drugs, as well as controlling international borders, extraditing wanted persons, and combating organized crime and money laundering, explaining that all of these articles and matters that were signed will enter into force.
    He added that the Syrian Minister has a busy program today in Baghdad, where he will visit all the joints and training facilities located in the Ministry of Interior in Baghdad, to review them, noting that an invitation has been sent to police students in the Syrian Arab Republic to participate in training courses for Iraqi Interior institutions. 
    For his part, Al-Rahmoun said during the conference that he discussed with the Iraqi Minister of the Interior this morning ways of cooperation in all fields, especially in the security field, explaining that the two countries suffer from the phenomenon of terrorism and armed terrorist organizations with their various names.
    The Syrian Minister pointed out that there is a criminal phenomenon carried out by drug trafficking and human trafficking gangs, stressing, “We signed a security cooperation memorandum a short while ago to cooperate in the field of combating terrorism, combating drug trafficking, human trafficking, and cybersecurity, and cooperation in rehabilitation and training to reach law enforcement.”
    He noted that cooperation had previously yielded fruit in the field of combating drugs by dismantling some networks and seizing some quantities of drugs, stressing that the two countries are continuing to cooperate.
    He pointed out that combating the drug phenomenon cannot be implemented by one party, explaining that both of us and the region need cooperation, and a meeting will be held next July in Baghdad for more comprehensive regional cooperation. 
    Syrian Interior Minister Muhammad Khaled al-Rahmoun arrived yesterday evening, Saturday, in the capital, Baghdad, on an official visit that will last for several days.
