Today, Thursday, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq, Masrour Barzani, and an American official stressed the importance of resuming the region’s oil exports, while noting that stopping them had cost the Iraqi treasury billions of dollars in losses.
The regional government stated in a statement received by Mawazine News that, “The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, received, today, Thursday, US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources Affairs, Jeffrey Payette.”
The statement added, "The meeting, which was attended by the US Ambassador to Iraq, Alina Romanowski, discussed ways to develop and strengthen the energy sector in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, including benefiting from clean and renewable energy, and discussing plans and projects aimed at advancing the electricity sector in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region."
The two sides stressed "the importance of resuming Kurdistan Region's oil exports, especially since stopping them has caused billions of dollars in losses to the public treasury of Iraq."
After the conclusion of the meeting, the Prime Minister and the US Assistant Secretary of State conducted a field tour of the MAS Global power station in Birdawood, and the Khurmala station and field of the Car Group companies in Erbil Governorate, where they toured sections of both sites, according to the statement.
Then the two sides made a press statement in which they stressed "the importance of advancing the energy sector in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, through the use of clean energy, protecting the environment, and reducing air pollution."
The Prime Minister appreciated "the United States' interest in developing the energy sector in Iraq and the Kurdistan region," expressing his "appreciation for its support to achieve better steps and progress in these sectors."
For his part, the US Assistant Secretary of State expressed, "His country's support for a strong and developed Kurdistan within the framework of federal Iraq."
He expressed his "admiration for the development of the energy industry in this region," and described it as "keeping pace with and meeting international and global standards."
He compared it to some oil-producing areas in his country, saying: “When I look at the scene here, it reminds me of what exists in the state of Oklahoma, but in a smaller form.”
