Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: A member of the Iraqi Parliament revealed that representatives of the Kurdistan Democratic Bloc will elect Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani as Speaker of Parliament in Saturday’s session.
On Saturday, the Iraqi Council of Representatives, headed by acting president Mohsen al-Mandalawi, scheduled a session to choose a new speaker of parliament, to succeed Muhammad al-Halbousi.
Firas Al-Muslimaoui, a member of the State of Law coalition, said, “Most of the forces of the coordinating framework will elect Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani as President of the Iraqi Council of Representatives on Saturday.”
Firas Al-Muslimaoui explained that “The Taqadum Party, as the largest Sunni bloc, will elect Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, in addition to the Sadara bloc will elect Al-Mashhadani,” noting: “We have information confirming that the Kurdistan Democratic Bloc will also elect Al-Mashhadani.”
The leadership race in the Iraqi Council of Representatives is considered a crucial stage, witnessing a complex political struggle between the various parties. The support of the dismissed Speaker of Parliament, Muhammad al-Halbousi, for a candidate from outside Anbar Governorate appears as a strategic step to exclude any new leadership that threatens, which raises many questions about interests, not national goals.
It appears that Al-Halbousi’s support for a candidate from outside Anbar Governorate comes in the context of serving his personal interests and the interests of his party instead of other considerations, according to accusations made against him by Sunni figures.
The leader of the United Anbar Alliance, Muhammad Dahham, revealed the real reasons behind the support of the dismissed Speaker of Parliament, Muhammad al-Halbousi, for a candidate from outside Anbar Governorate to head the House of Representatives.
Dahham said, “Al-Halbousi supported Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani in order to serve his interests and the interests of his party, and not because he was better than Salem Al-Issawi.”
He added, “Al-Halbousi supported a figure from outside Anbar, to maintain his position as a leader in the province.”
Thus, Al-Halbousi is afraid of a competing figure in Anbar, and this is embodied in Al-Issawi, who is considered the real competitor to Al-Halbousi and that is why he is afraid of him.
This support from Al-Halbousi appears as a strategic step to strengthen his position within the political scene and prevent any competing Sunni leadership from ascending.
It seems that Al-Halbousi’s support for a candidate from outside Anbar aims to preserve his image as a leader in the province, as he seeks to strengthen his political and popular base in the Sunni community in Iraq.
Al-Halbousi's fears appear regarding his rival figures within Anbar Governorate, such as Salem Al-Issawi, whom he considers a real competitor. This behavior shows his determination to reduce the chances of his local rivals to ensure his leadership.
Al-Halbousi’s support for a candidate outside Anbar Governorate reflects an elaborate political strategy, reflecting his orientation towards strengthening his political and leadership position in Iraq.
