In a repeated step, employees of the South Refineries Company returned to demonstrate in protest against an “old and new” government trend of raising the price of a barrel of crude oil from extraction companies to refineries, a trend that had previously been put in the 2021 budget and then in the 2023 tripartite budget. He faced great uproar and objection, which led to the suspension of work on this approach.

The employees of the Central Refineries Company organized protests today, Sunday, in rejection of the government’s approach to raise the price of a barrel of crude oil to the refineries, while they warned that this approach will turn the refineries into losers and lead to an increase in the price of regular gasoline, perhaps, in addition to the possibility of restructuring the refineries.

Information was leaked about a government intention to raise the price of a barrel of crude oil sold to refineries to 16,000 Iraqi dinars in the 2024 budget tables, an approach that had previously been included in 2021 and 2023 before it was suspended as a result of objections.

The price of a barrel of oil sold to refineries currently ranges between 7 and 10 thousand dinars, and raising the price of a barrel of oil to refineries will reduce their profits, and either lead to them losing or being forced to raise the price of a liter of regular gasoline and kerosene for the final citizen consumer.
